Leh, the capital of Ladakh, is simply breathtaking. Towering over the city is the tall nine-storied palace built by Ladakh’s ruler Sengge Namgyal in the early 17th century. It is said to have served as a model for the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Another palace built by King Tashi Namgyal in the 16th century stands above it. Down below is the beautiful sight of the town, set in an oasis of green fields. From Leh, one can wander off on marvellous day expeditions to get a glimpse of some of the treasures of Ladakh. Not far from Leh, Shey is the oldest capital of Ladakh from where its earliest Tibetan kings ruled. Perched on top of a huge rock are the royal palace and temples adorned with brilliantly coloured murals and gold statue of Buddha.

Stok Palace across the river from Leh is the home of the erstwhile royal family. Its palace houses a museum of artefacts associated with the dynasty. Also within easy reach of Leh are a large number of monasteries, including Spituk (8 km), Thikse (20 km), Hemis (45 km), Likir Monastery (52 km), Alchi (65 km) and Lamayuru (125 km).
