Dr. Swarna Srinivasan IAS Appointed Principal Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments in Tamil Nadu

Senior IAS officer Dr. S. Swarna Srinivasan has been appointed as Principal Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu for the Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department, as part of a major administrative reshuffle following the assumption of office by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijayan.

Dr. Swarna, a 1997-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, moves into this role from her previous position as Principal Secretary and State Project Director of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). With nearly three decades of distinguished service spanning finance, education, commerce, industries, and district administration, she brings a formidable breadth of experience to one of the state’s most pivotal departments.

Her career has seen her hold several high-profile leadership roles, including Chairperson and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI), Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Infrastructure and Financial Services Ltd, and Joint Development Commissioner at the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ-SEZ), Chennai. She has also served as District Collector of Kanyakumari, Executive Director of the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, Joint Commissioner in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Deputy Commissioner in Commercial Taxes, and Special Officer in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, among other assignments.

Dr. Swarna holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree and entered the IAS through direct recruitment via the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Her appointment is widely seen as a strategic choice by the new government. Tamil Nadu’s tourism sector is currently drawing millions of domestic and international visitors, with its magnificent temple architecture and pilgrimage circuits emerging as signature draws. The Religious Endowments Department, which directly oversees many of these iconic temples, plays a central role in shaping this experience. Greater coordination between the Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments departments is expected to strengthen the state’s ability to develop and market integrated pilgrimage and cultural tourism products – an area where Dr. Swarna’s appointment signals clear intent.

Her firsthand experience as District Collector of Kanyakumari – a district that is itself a major pilgrimage and tourism destination – gives her a practical understanding of ground-level tourism dynamics that will be a distinct advantage in her new role.
