Senior IAS Officer Takes Charge in Key Tamil Nadu Tourism Role
In a recent bureaucratic reshuffle in Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.S. Shanmugam, a 2002-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been appointed as the Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).
Dr. Shanmugam, who was most recently serving as Secretary-II to the Chief Minister at the Chief Minister’s Office in Chennai, brings over two decades of distinguished administrative experience to his new role. He holds a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Economics, reflecting a strong academic foundation that has complemented his career in public service.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Shanmugam has held several key positions across diverse departments, including District Collector of Thanjavur, Additional Secretary in the Industries Department, Project Director of the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Fiber Net Corporation. He was also notably involved in special relief operations during the 2011 Thane cyclone, demonstrating his crisis management capabilities. In December 2025, he was elevated to the rank of Principal Secretary in the Government of Tamil Nadu.
His wide-ranging experience in industries, land revenue, disaster management, and infrastructure is expected to bring fresh momentum to Tamil Nadu’s tourism sector as the state continues to position itself as a premier destination for both domestic and international travellers.
