Enhancing Hospitality for Neurodivergent Travelers: Hyatt’s Survey Insights and Collaborative Initiatives

In a collaborative effort with KultureCity, a prominent nonprofit focusing on sensory accessibility, and external consultants from New York University, Hyatt has conducted a survey shedding light on the unique needs of neurodivergent travelers.

Released on April 25, 2024, the survey findings highlight the significant portion of individuals in the U.S. with sensory needs or invisible disabilities, encompassing conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and attention-deficit disorder. With over 90% of neurodivergent individuals and their caregivers planning overnight travels this year, the survey underscores the importance of making hotel stays more seamless and inclusive.

Key Survey Insights:

Transparent Booking Process: Nearly 70% of caregivers and over half of neurodivergent travelers expressed willingness to disclose their neurodiversity during the booking process, emphasizing the need for customized care.

Visual Preparations: More than 50% of neurodivergent respondents sought additional property visual layouts (such as 3D virtual tours) to facilitate their travel experience.

Flexibility in Room Assignments: Over 60% of caregivers advocated for pre-assigned rooms to enhance the check-in experience, with a focus on selecting rooms conducive to individual needs.

Personalized Communication: While email remains the preferred communication method, 30% of neurodivergent travelers expressed a desire for phone calls about upcoming stays, highlighting the importance of personalized communication.

Initiatives by Hyatt:

Training and Awareness: Hyatt is committed to training on-property teams to better serve neurodivergent individuals, exemplified by its Certified Autism Center™ designation at Hyatt Regency Aqaba Ayla in Jordan.

Enhanced Visuals: Hyatt provides 3D room tours on its website to assist neurodivergent travelers in preparing for their stays, with plans to expand this capability.

Flexible Booking Options: Guests can request specific room locations and amenities through Hyatt.com or the World of Hyatt app, enhancing the overall travel experience.

Digital Check-In and Wellbeing Offerings: Hyatt offers digital check-in/out services and in-room sleep gadgets to limit in-person interactions and promote guest comfort.

Through these efforts, Hyatt aims to create more inclusive spaces and enhance the overall travel experience for neurodivergent individuals, aligning with its commitment to care and inclusion at every level of the organization.
