IHG Hotels & Resorts Survey Reveals Holiday Travellers Craving a Post-Vacation Escape

Amid the joy and anticipation of holiday reunions, a recent survey conducted by IHG Hotels & Resorts in collaboration with OnePoll indicates that many holiday travelllers are seeking an additional escape to relax and recharge after spending time with family.

The survey, which polled 2,000 U.S. holiday travellers, found that 71% of respondents expressed a desire for a separate vacation after their family gatherings to unwind fully and rejuvenate. The preferences for relaxation included taking a nap in a cozy and spacious bed (60%), enjoying a soak in a jacuzzi (46%), or indulging in a calming spa day (42%).

With IHG’s commitment to ensuring that people feel taken care of and can live their best lives, the survey aimed to uncover what travellers need most during the busy and stressful holiday season and identify the creature comforts that help them feel at ease.

Connor Smith, Vice President of Masterbrand Strategy at IHG Hotels & Resorts, noted, “The holidays often involve traveling to see loved ones, and as much as we enjoy these visits, it can leave us feeling drained. When that happens, people want to relax and be taken care of, enjoying free breakfast from Holiday Inn Express or a glass of wine at Kimpton’s  social hour without worrying about cleaning their room in the morning.”

For those choosing not to stay with friends and relatives, 55% are opting for hotels, citing reasons such as having more personal space (34%), being taken care of by someone else (34%), enjoying quiet time (32%), being themselves (29%), and avoiding the cleanup after meals (27%).

Whether travellers prefer a quiet and clean space to relax (86%) or a place where they can recharge on their terms (83%), the survey highlights the importance of choosing accommodations that make guests feel welcomed and cared for. With 6,000 hotels and 19 brands, IHG Hotels & Resorts emphasizes real people taking care of real people, providing guests with more control and greater personal choice.

As the holidays approach, 69% of respondents expressed a desire to stay somewhere festively decorated when travelling. IHG Luxury & Lifestyle hotels in the Americas, for example, offer Winter Chalet-themed lobby installations as part of the festive experience.

“Staying at a hotel over the holidays allows travellers to recharge and rejoin the holiday festivities on their terms. When travellers are ready for a break during or after the holiday season, they can show up as themselves and leave the rest to us,” remarked Smith.
