Mr R. Rajendran has officially taken charge as Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Tourism, Tourism Development Corporation, Sugar, Sugarcane Excise, and Sugarcane Development under the leadership of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr M.K. Stalin. Representing the Salem North constituency, Rajendran is also the Salem Central District Secretary for the ruling DMK party and previously represented the Panamarathupatty constituency.
Rajendran was inducted into the Tamil Nadu Cabinet on September 29, 2024, becoming the second Minister from Salem District in the DMK government. With a strong foundation in public service, he brings extensive experience from decades in Tamil Nadu politics, having begun his political journey as a student activist. Born on June 3, 1959, Rajendran hails from an agricultural family in Tamil Nadu.
He completed his early education in Salem, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree and a law degree. His political career began during his college years, and in 1985, he was appointed as the Salem District Organizer for the DMK Student Wing by the DMK
President and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Later, he advanced to roles within the DMK Youth Wing under the guidance of the current Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin, who appointed him State Youth Wing Deputy Secretary in 1999.
Rajendran’s legislative career includes election victories in the Panamarathupatty constituency in 2006 and the Salem North constituency in 2016 and 2021. Known for his dedication to public welfare, he brings a wealth of experience to his new role in the tourism sector. Rajendran is married to Suseela Rajendran, and the couple has a daughter.
