Move to ensure stability of operations, better efficiency and minimise inconvenience to passengers
In response to a recent tragedy and ongoing operational challenges, Air India announced a 15% reduction in its international wide-body aircraft services for the next several weeks. This measure, effective between June 18 and at least mid-July, aims to stabilize operations, improve efficiency, and minimize passenger inconvenience.
Deep Condolences and Support Efforts
Air India expressed profound sorrow over the loss of 241 passengers and crew members aboard flight AI171. The airline extended its deepest condolences to the families affected by the accident, considering them part of the Air India family.
In coordination with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Government of Gujarat, Air India and Tata Group volunteers are actively supporting the families of the deceased and injured. This includes assistance at hospitals in Ahmedabad and facilitating the return of mortal remains to their homes.
Enhanced Safety Measures Underway
Investigations into the accident are ongoing. Following the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) mandate, Air India has initiated “Enhanced Safety Inspection” across its Boeing 787-8/9 fleet. Out of 33 aircraft, 26 have completed inspections and are cleared for service, with the remaining few expected to be cleared shortly. This high clearance rate reinforces confidence in Air India’s safety protocols.
As an additional precaution, Air India will also implement enhanced safety checks on its Boeing 777 fleet. The airline reaffirms its commitment to cooperating with authorities, including the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), DGCA, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, to ensure the highest level of safety for passengers, crew, and aircraft.
Temporary Route Curtailment Due to Compounding Factors
Over the past six days, Air India’s international operations have experienced disruptions, leading to 83 cancellations. This has been attributed to a combination of factors:
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East
Night curfews in European and East Asian airspaces
Ongoing enhanced safety inspections
A cautious approach adopted by engineering staff and pilots
To address these compounding circumstances and ensure operational stability, the airline made the difficult decision to reduce its international wide-body services by 15%. This strategic move will also increase reserve aircraft availability to manage unforeseen disruptions.
Air India apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these curtailments. Affected passengers will be notified in advance and offered options to reschedule their travel without charge or receive a full refund. The revised international flight schedule, effective June 20, 2025, will be released soon.
