Muzhappilangad-Dharmadam beach development project will boost state’s tourism sector : Kerala Chief Minister

 Muzhupilangad-Dharmadam Comprehensive Beach Development Project , being implemented by the Kerala Government, will accelerate the growth of   tourism in the entire state, Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating Kerala Tourism Development Corporation’s (KTDC) premium property Malabar Courtyard at Muzhappilangad, built at a cost of Rs. 51.86 crore as part of the beach development project.

“Being the largest drive-in beach in Asia, Muzhappilingad beach has a special place in world tourism map. The 4-km drive in beach is attracting not only domestic tourists but also international travellers,” Mr. Vijayan said.

“KTDC has identified the tourism potential of the region and has built a world class resort complying with ecofriendly construction methods providing tourists with all the necessary facilities,” he noted.

The Rs 238 Cr  Muzhupilangad- Dharmadam  Comprehensive Beach Development Project  will enable  integrated development of the region which has potential to elevate the state’s tourism sector, he said.

The project is being implemented by marking four character areas namely northern and southern sides of Muzhappilangad beach, Dharmadam beach, and the  Dharmadam Island.

“The first phase of the project has been completed.  A walkway, kids’ play area, refreshment centers, and vehicle parking facilities on the northern side of Muzhappilangad beach have been completed within a budget of Rs 62 crore, he said.

On the southern side of Muzhappilangad beach, a seating area, toilet, kiosk, parking and electrification will be provided, he said.

A floating deck, giant wheel, music fountain, jogging and cycling track will be set up at Dharmadam Beach and on the Dharmadam Island, where migratory birds flock, marking it as a natural hub. An underwater sculpture garden and an elevated nature walk will  also be built,  the Chief Minister said.

A detailed project report , including the access options to the island, is being considered, he added.

Once these projects are completed, Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam beaches will become major tourist destinations.  Malabar Courtyard will further boost the tourist footfall to the site, he noted.

Dr. V. Sivadasan, MP, presided over the function. KTDC Managing Director  & Tourism Director Mr. Shikha Surendran said that the KTDC resort will open up new opportunities in tourism sector not only for Muzhappilangadu but the entire Malabar region.

The foundation-stone for the property was laid by the Chief Minister on October 30, 2021. It has been completed within the time-frame set, meeting all the architectural and aesthetic features suitable for the region’s ecology, she added.

Mr.Binoy Kurien, President, Kannur District Panchayath , Mr.P M Prabhakaran Master, President, Thalassery Block Panchayath, Mr.Athul PM, President Muzhappilangad Grama Panchayath, Mr. Nimisha K V, Vice President, Muzhappilangad Grama Panchayath, Mr.Anushree K, Member, Kannur District Panchayath and Mr.N.P. Chandradas, Member, Thalassery Block Panchayath, attended the function along with KTDC Board members.

Malabar Courtyard, which spreads around a 6.5- acre site within the Muzhappilangad- Dharamadam beach tourism circuit, boasts of world class facilities, including a vast swimming pool at its centre.

The resort is developed at a cost of Rs. 51.86 crore, funded by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The resort has eight cottages in four blocks, eight suite rooms in two blocks and 40 rooms. It also has two types of rooms of 285 sq ft each called Aqua Grove and Aqua Vista, spacious 548 sq ft suite rooms with living space, a conference hall with seating capacity for 100 persons and a plush and digitally-connected Board Room for holding business and official meetings. It also features an indoor recreation area and a well-equipped health club.
