Willie Walsh to Lead IndiGo: IATA’s Director General Appointed as CEO of India’s Largest Airline

In a move that signals IndiGo’s ambitions on the global aviation stage, the Board of InterGlobe Aviation Limited has appointed Aviation industry veteran Mr. William Walsh – better known in aviation circles as Willie Walsh – as its new Chief Executive Officer. The appointment is subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh’s tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association concludes on July 31, 2026, and he is expected to take the helm at IndiGo no later than August 3.
A Career That Spans the Cockpit to the Boardroom

Walsh brings to IndiGo one of the most decorated careers in modern commercial aviation. He began as a pilot before rising through the ranks to serve as Chief Operating Officer and then Chief Executive of Aer Lingus between 2000 and 2005. He then led British Airways as CEO from 2005 to 2011, before taking charge of International Airlines Group – the holding company behind Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level, and Vueling – where he served as CEO until 2020. He has since led IATA as Director General, representing the interests of the global airline industry through some of its most turbulent years.

His reputation in the industry rests on a rare combination of qualities: pragmatic, resolute management; the ability to execute complex restructurings; and a track record of successful mergers and acquisitions across some of Europe’s most storied carriers.

Mr. Vikram Singh Mehta, IndiGo’s Chairman, was unequivocal about the significance of the appointment. “I am thrilled that Willie will be at the helm of IndiGo,” he said. “He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record across several airlines. His experience in managing large-scale operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo in an ever-evolving and competitive international aviation environment. His appointment will mark a new chapter for IndiGo as it continues its journey in one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world.”

Mr. Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, framed the appointment within the airline’s broader growth trajectory. “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo,” he said. “He brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise, deep industry experience, and values-driven leadership — making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal moment.”
In his new role, Walsh will be responsible for IndiGo’s overall management and strategic direction, with a particular focus on strengthening operational performance, advancing the airline’s network and commercial strategy, and enhancing the customer experience. He will work closely with the Board and the leadership team as IndiGo scales into its next phase of growth.
Walsh himself expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo,” he said. “The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision, and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people — their passion, professionalism, and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”

For an airline that carries more passengers domestically than any other carrier in India, the arrival of a leader with Walsh’s global credentials marks a clear statement of intent – that IndiGo is no longer simply thinking about India, but about what comes next.
