Mohamed Ameen appointed as Maldives Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation

The Maldives has a new Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation. President Mohamed Muizzu has appointed the Aviation veteran Mr. Mohamed Ameen to head the newly restructured ministry, which now brings together the country’s two most strategically interlinked sectors under a single portfolio.

Ameen brings considerable relevant experience to the expanded role. Prior to his cabinet tenure, he held senior positions at Island Aviation Services – the state-owned carrier operating as Maldivian – and has served as Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation since the current administration took office in November 2023. His deep familiarity with the aviation ecosystem that drives Maldivian tourism makes him a natural fit for the combined brief.

The structural merger is rooted in practical logic. Tourism is the backbone of the Maldivian economy, and aviation is its primary artery – every international visitor arrives by air, and domestic connectivity to the archipelago’s far-flung resorts depends entirely on seaplane and regional air transfers. Placing both portfolios under one minister is expected to enable more coordinated planning on route development, airport infrastructure, airline partnerships, and seat capacity – decisions that directly influence resort occupancy and arrival volumes.

For Indian travel trade partners, destination management companies, and airlines operating on the lucrative India–Maldives corridor, the new ministerial arrangement signals a more integrated approach to tourism and connectivity planning. India has consistently ranked among the Maldives’ top source markets, and any policy moves that streamline aviation and tourism decision-making are likely to have direct implications for bilateral travel volumes.

Minister Ameen assumes charge at a time when the Maldives continues to aggressively expand its resort inventory and court new source markets. How effectively the combined ministry manages the balance between commercial tourism growth and the technical rigour that civil aviation demands will be closely watched by industry stakeholders across the region.
