Mr. Raja Gopal Sunkara, I.A.S., has been appointed as the Director of Tourism, Tamil Nadu, and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC). A 2015-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Sunkara is a direct recruit through the Union Public Service Commission’s Civil Services Examination. He has built a diverse administrative career spanning multiple responsibilities and locations, gaining experience in district administration, governance and public service delivery.
Prior to his new assignment, Sunkara served as Collector of Erode District from June 4, 2026. His administrative experience is expected to bring a strong focus on effective implementation, destination development and stakeholder engagement to Tamil Nadu Tourism.
With Tamil Nadu emerging as one of India’s most important destinations for heritage, culture, spirituality, wellness, wildlife, coastal and experiential tourism, his leadership comes at a significant time. The state has considerable potential to strengthen destination infrastructure, promote lesser-known attractions, enhance tourist experiences and expand domestic and international visitor markets.
