Air India’s Sweet Success: Delivering 1,000 Tonnes of Indian Mangoes Globally This Summer

From farms to global cities, Air India delivers 1,000 tonnes of Indian mangoes worldwide. Learn how the airline is leading in seasonal perishables logistics.

As summer ushers in the peak mango season, Air India is playing a pivotal role in bringing the beloved Indian “king of fruits” to tables worldwide. The airline has already transported nearly 1,000 tons of fresh Indian mangoes to eager consumers across Europe, North America, and the Middle East in April 2025, demonstrating its growing leadership in seasonal perishables logistics.

Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India, highlighted the significant increase in perishable shipments over the past year, with mangoes being a prime example. “We continue to invest in enhancing our cold-chain infrastructure, optimizing processes at key airports, and strengthening partnerships with exporters to establish Air India as the preferred choice for fresh cargo,” Mamidala stated.

Indian mangoes, particularly popular varieties like the Alphonso from Maharashtra and Safeda and Dussehri from Uttar Pradesh, are experiencing high demand globally. They are making a significant splash in cities such as Toronto, San Francisco, Frankfurt, Tokyo, and Sydney, fueling a worldwide craving for this seasonal delight. Air India’s extensive network facilitates this global connection, with over 75% of these mangoes originating from Western India and flying to 43 destinations in 31 countries across five continents.

Maintaining the freshness of these succulent fruits from farm to destination is a meticulous process. Air India employs a robust cold chain and precise cargo handling techniques. Mangoes are stored in temperature-controlled, APEDA-certified facilities before takeoff. Upon arrival at the airport, thermal blankets and cool dollies ensure the fruit remains chilled as it moves across the tarmac and into the aircraft’s cargo hold.

“Our teams handle mango shipments with the same precision and care you’d reserve for delicate glassware,” Mamidala explained. He added that for Air India, this mango season extends beyond mere transportation; “It’s about sharing the story of India’s farm-to-globe journey, driven by Air India’s vast network, consistency, and cutting-edge cargo capabilities.”

With the mango season in full swing, Air India is preparing for even larger volumes as exporters and freight partners work diligently to satisfy the growing global demand for Indian mangoes.
