Amrut Distilleries Launches Bella: A Celebration of India’s Timeless Craftsmanship

Amrut unveils the world’s first 100% Jaggery distilled Single Rum ‘Bella’

In a tribute to India’s rich cultural legacy, Amrut Distilleries, a trailblazer in the world of spirits, has officially launched Bella—the world’s first 100% jaggery-distilled and matured single rum. Made from nutrient-rich jaggery sourced from the fertile Sahyadri range and Mandya, Bella is matured for six years in ex-bourbon barrels under tropical conditions, marking a significant milestone in Indian distilling history. This unique rum is not only a reflection of India’s ancient craftsmanship but also commemorates the 75th anniversary of Amrut Distilleries.

Bella’s creation is deeply rooted in the vision of Mr. Neelkanta Rao Jagdale (NRJ), affectionately known as the “Father of Indian Single Malt.” His deep respect for Indian heritage set the foundation for Bella, further cementing Amrut’s legacy of innovation in spirits. NRJ’s relentless pursuit to craft rum from jaggery faced regulatory hurdles, as Karnataka Excise laws had no provisions for such a license. However, his determination led to the first-ever license being granted in 2012, allowing the production of jaggery-based rum.

At the global launch event held at Sheraton Grand Bengaluru Whitefield Hotel and Convention Centre, Mr Rakshit N. Jagdale, MD of Amrut Distilleries, expressed his gratitude: “We are honoured to bring my father’s vision to life. Bella is dedicated to him, as he pioneered this category by securing India’s first license for jaggery rum distillation. After a soft launch in July, today marks Bella’s global unveiling.”

Mr. Sanjay Gupta, General Manager of Sheraton Grand Bengaluru Whitefield, added, “We are proud to partner with Amrut for this historic occasion. Bella’s unique narrative, rooted in India’s heritage, makes it a special addition to the world of spirits, and it’s a privilege to host its launch.”

India has long been a producer of rum, primarily from molasses or cane juice. In 2013, Amrut set a new benchmark with the introduction of Two Indies Rum, a blend of Indian jaggery and Caribbean molasses. With Bella, Amrut deepens its commitment to this tradition, celebrating jaggery’s ancient roots—an ingredient with origins in the Indus Valley Civilization.

The name “Bella” holds special significance, as it translates to “jaggery” in Kannada, the language spoken in Karnataka, where Amrut Distillery is based. Bella is not just another rum but a symbol of Amrut’s dedication to preserving India’s heritage. It is poised to create a new category in the global spirits market—Premium Indian Rums.
