Bahrain is poised to make history by becoming the inaugural Middle Eastern nation to host the 9th UNWTO’s World Forum on Gastronomy. This momentous occasion, announced during the 8th World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in San Sebastian, Spain, highlights Bahrain’s rich heritage, diverse culture, and flourishing tourism industry, positioning the kingdom as a global hub for gastronomy tourism.
With its unique blend of tradition and modernity, Bahrain intends to use the 2024 World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism as a catalyst for promoting responsible agricultural practices. The event, scheduled to unfold at Exhibition World Bahrain in Sakhir, aims to emphasize the importance of nurturing local communities while preserving Bahrain’s cultural heritage and traditions. Attendees can anticipate a range of engaging activities, including visits to local producers and culinary classes, offering a firsthand experience of Bahrain’s vibrant culinary landscape rooted in its historical legacy.
The hosting of the forum is a crucial element in Bahrain’s vision for the transformation of its tourism sector in 2024. The forum is expected to draw attention to Bahrain’s distinct position as a destination that provides a multifaceted and comprehensive travel experience.
Under Royal Decree number (76) for the year 2015 issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) was established in 2015. BTEA’s responsibilities encompass all sectors related to national tourism affairs in the Kingdom, including organizing conventions and trade exhibitions, attracting international, regional, and local conferences, and supervising and assessing licenses for conventions and trade exhibitions. The goal is to attract significant international events that engage a large number of tourists, reinforcing Bahrain’s position as a key tourism attraction regionally and internationally. BTEA also aims to enhance the contribution of the tourism sector to the national economy, aligning with the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the objectives of the Economic Development Board.
