Saputara Monsoon Festival Kicks Off with Grand Cultural Extravaganza in Gujarat’s Only Hill Station

Gujarat’s picturesque hill station, Saputara, burst into a kaleidoscope of colors and rhythms as the 2025 edition of the Saputara Monsoon Festival commenced on July 26, 2025, with a spectacular inauguration. The 23-day celebration, designed to showcase India’s vibrant cultural tapestry against the backdrop of monsoon’s lush beauty, was officially opened by Chief Minister of Gujarat Mr. Bhupendrabhai Patel. He was joined by Tourism Minister Mr. Mulubhai Bera, Mr. Kunvarjibhai Halpati, MoS for Labour and Skill Development, Gujarat; Mr. Dhavalbhai Patel MP, and Mr. Vijaybhai Patel MLA, among other distinguished guests.

A Parade of Unity and Heritage

The festival’s grand inauguration was marked by a breathtaking Folk Carnival Parade, setting the tone for the entire event. Under the unifying theme of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Great India), a powerful tribute to the nation’s diversity, over 350 traditional artists from 13 Indian states performed in unison. This vibrant spectacle embodied Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” (Development Hand-in-Hand with Cultural Heritage).

The parade was a visual feast, featuring an array of traditional folk dances including Lavani and Dhangari Gaja from Maharashtra, Bhangra from Punjab, Kalbeliya from Rajasthan, Chhau from West Bengal, Bihu from Assam, Badhai from Madhya Pradesh, Gussadi from Telangana, Poojakunitha from Karnataka, Nati from Himachal Pradesh, and Dhamal from Haryana. From Gujarat itself, artists showcased the Dangi folk dance, Chhatri Hudo, Rathwa dance, Siddi Dhamal, Talvar Raas, Dobru-Kircha, Garba, 52 Beda, Dangi-Kahadiya, and Mewasi dance. Colourful props such as Lok Mela, Jumping Kawadi, Giant Puppets, Ladakhi Masks, and a Snow Lion from Leh added to the festive atmosphere, alongside a striking tableau themed on “Operation Sindoor” to raise awareness about India’s recent strategic efforts and achievements.

The opening ceremony also featured 87 artists from various states performing classical and folk forms like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Yakshagana, Manipuri Raas, Kathakali, Langa, Pung, Rouf, Dhangari, Dollu Kunitha, Ghoomar, Mayur, and Kathak, electrifying the audience.

Immersive Experiences and Cultural Highlights

Running until August 17, 2025, the Saputara Monsoon Festival promises an immersive experience for all visitors. The program is packed with weekly cultural performances, hands-on creative workshops, exhibitions of local handicrafts, and a chance to savor authentic Dangi cuisine. For thrill-seekers, a range of adventure activities is on offer, all set against the stunning, lush green landscape of Saputara.

Early highlights have already included a high-octane performance by the Thekkinkadu Aattam Band from Thrissur, Kerala, which captivated Sunday night’s crowd with its unique blend of rhythm and rain-soaked magic. Looking ahead, Gujarati folk sensation Dhruvam Trivedi is scheduled to perform on August 1st, while local college bands and young artists from Gujarat will also have opportunities to showcase their talent. The first week of the festival has been themed ‘Tribal Heritage Week,’ dedicated to celebrating tribal arts and crafts, traditional cuisines, and the unique skills of the local communities, complete with engaging selfie zones.

Engaging Visitors and Promoting Local Gems

The festival’s aim extends beyond cultural celebration, seeking to promote tourism and create employment opportunities for local communities. Secretary of Tourism, Mr. Rajender Kumar IAS, actively engaged with leading social media influencers during the opening, encouraging them to explore and highlight Saputara’s lesser-known treasures, particularly the rich Dangi culture and its distinctive cuisine. Many influencers hailed the hill station as a “hidden gem” deserving of a monsoon revisit, underscoring its growing appeal.

Beyond the main performances, the festival lineup includes a mini-marathon on August 15, a ‘Sunday on Cycle’ event, and Dahi Handi celebrations on Janmashtami. Visitors can also enjoy rain dance zones, explore scenic forest trails, engage in traditional games, and capture memories at themed selfie points. A grand moving tableau will travel through Saputara, offering entertainment and prizes to lucky winners.

Packed with vibrant parades, diverse art forms, captivating music, local gastronomy, and intricate crafts, the Saputara Monsoon Festival 2025 is a compelling invitation for travelers to discover the heart of Gujarat’s monsoon magic and immerse themselves in India’s rich cultural soul.
