Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence Set to Reshape Tourism

Tourism has continually evolved through innovation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as one of the forces likely to transform the sector in the years ahead. World Tourism Day 2026 will spotlight the role of digital technologies and AI in building smarter, more inclusive and sustainable tourism.

The theme will examine how AI can support better decision-making, strengthen skills and productivity, personalise visitor experiences and help destinations manage tourism more efficiently. From forecasting demand and improving mobility to supporting destination planning and enhancing visitor services, AI is increasingly becoming part of the tourism industry’s digital agenda.

El Salvador to Host World Tourism Day 2026

El Salvador will serve as the official host country for World Tourism Day 2026, which will be observed on September 27.

The date has historical significance for the global tourism community. On 27 September 1970, the foundational statutes of the World Tourism Organization, now known as UN Tourism, were adopted. World Tourism Day has been observed annually on this date since 1980, providing an international platform to highlight the economic, social and cultural importance of tourism.

World’s Most Visited Countries

International tourism continues to be dominated by destinations with strong cultural attractions, established tourism infrastructure and global connectivity. Current estimates place France at the top of the world’s most visited countries, with more than 100 million international arrivals.

The leading destinations include:

France: approximately 102 million international arrivals

Spain: approximately 96.8 million

United States: approximately 72.4–77.1 million

China: approximately 65.7 million

Italy: approximately 64.5 million

These figures underline the continuing strength of Europe’s major tourism markets while highlighting the significant scale of international travel to destinations across North America and Asia.

As tourism enters an increasingly digital era, the adoption of AI is expected to influence everything from destination marketing and visitor services to demand forecasting, resource management and sustainable tourism planning. World Tourism Day 2026 provides an opportunity to examine how these technologies can be used not simply to increase tourism activity, but to create more efficient, accessible and responsible tourism systems.
