Hamad International Airport Celebrates a Decade of Operational Excellence

Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar marks its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of connecting passengers through Doha. Since beginning operations in 2014, the airport has welcomed 325.1 million passengers and has been recognized as the ‘World’s Best Airport’ three times by the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards. Additionally, it was ranked as the airport with the second-best air connectivity in the Middle East by Airport Council International in 2023. These accolades highlight the airport’s commitment to innovation, customer-centric approach, and effective operational management.

From May 2014 to May 2024, Hamad International Airport handled 2.1 million aircraft movements, carried 20.5 million tonnes of cargo, and processed 258 million bags. As Qatar Airways’ hub, the airport collaborates with over 45 airline partners, including 14 legacy airlines. After Phase A of its expansion in 2022, the airport’s capacity increased to 58 million passengers annually, serving over 200 destinations, including passenger, cargo, and chartered flights.

Hamad International Airport offers a unique experience with over 40 permanent art displays by local, regional, and international artists, and more than 200 retail and dining outlets, including several world-firsts and exclusives. The airport’s emphasis on art and culture enhances the travel experience for all passengers.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. To mark its 10th anniversary, Hamad International Airport hosted a series of celebrations with cultural performances and live music, engaging both the airport team and passengers in the festivities.

The success of Hamad International Airport is attributed to its skilled workforce. The airport prioritizes training and development, utilizing big data and analytics to support talent growth. It adheres to the highest standards of service and safety, earning the ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System Certificate from BSI. With a diverse team representing over 70 nationalities, the airport continues initiatives to enhance operations, customer experience, and the working environment.

The airport underwent significant expansion in November 2022, increasing its terminal space by 125,000m². Phase A of the expansion included the ORCHARD indoor tropical garden, new transfer halls, a Remote Transfer Baggage Facility (RTBF), and new lounges such as the Al Mourjan Garden Lounge, home to the only Louis Vuitton Lounge at an airport.

Hamad International Airport has enhanced its services for travellers with reduced mobility and special needs. It offers shuttle services, a sensory room (Muzn Lounge), and an Animal Relief Area. Customer-facing staff receive special training to support passengers throughout their journey. The airport has also introduced multiple wayfinding solutions, with more than 65 QR codes and 40 digital devices to assist passengers in navigating the terminal.

The airport prides itself on providing a seamless travel experience. The Oryx Airport Hotel offers 100 rooms for short-term stays, complemented by the award-winning Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre. The airport also features 19 lounges and numerous unique retail and dining options, including the Dior Spa, Thom Browne store, Oreo café, and Harrods Tea Room.

Hamad International Airport is dedicated to environmental sustainability, implementing initiatives to reduce its ecological footprint. The airport’s enhanced waste management system achieved a 40% reuse or recycle rate between 2022 and 2023. It treats 100% of its sewage and uses treated sewage effluent for landscape irrigation, eliminating potable water usage. Various energy-saving initiatives have led to the airport achieving ACI ACA Level-3 Airport Carbon Accreditation and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems accreditation.

Hamad International Airport remains committed to enhancing the travel experience while maintaining high safety standards, efficiency, and sustainability. With Phase B of its expansion underway, the airport is set to introduce new attractions within the terminal and expand its network and destinations, solidifying its position as a premier global travel hub.
