Mr. Ibrahim Faisal has been appointed as the Minister for Tourism in the Republic of Maldives by the President of the Maldives, HE Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Recognized as a key contributor to the nation’s economy, tourism holds significant importance in the Maldives. Mr. Faisal officially assumed the role of Minister of Tourism on November 17, 2023, taking the oath of office during a ceremony held at the President’s Office, following the swearing-in of the new president.
Having pursued higher education in Business Management at Westminster International College, Malaysia, Mr. Ibrahim Faisal brings a well-rounded academic background to his ministerial role. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports from 2013 to 2015, followed by a role as an additional secretary at the High Commission of Maldives in Malaysia from 2015 to 2018.
Embarking on his political journey in 2013, Minister Ibrahim Faisal’s decade-long journey is rooted in a foundation of education and diverse work experiences. His public service career began in the police force, and he subsequently held the position of deputy minister in the Ministry of Youth and Sports from 2013 to 2015, followed by his role as an additional secretary in Malaysia from 2015 to 2018.
Reports highlight that, under the joint leadership of Faisal and Muizzu, the Maldives government has unveiled ambitious plans to rejuvenate tourism. These plans include a commitment to secure MVR 4 billion in investments and the development of 35 new tourist resorts, aiming to create a diversified and thriving hospitality landscape.
Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by the nation, the duo pledges to address budget deficits and boost GDP, emphasizing their commitment to financial resilience. Minister Faisal’s background in business management and strategic planning positions him well to contribute to these pivotal economic objectives.
Tourism plays a vital role in the Maldives’ economy, serving as the largest industry and significantly contributing to foreign exchange earnings. With approximately 25,000 jobs in the tertiary sector linked to tourism, the allure of the Maldives’ archipelago continues to attract numerous tourists. Notably, Chinese entrepreneurs have been actively acquiring tourism-related assets in the country, reflecting the substantial influence they hold over the nation’s economic landscape due to tourism being the primary driver of the Maldives’ economy.
