In Loving Memory of Victor Bernard Dey

Victor Bernard Dey, a revered pioneer whose life and work left an enduring imprint on both plantation and tourism communities of South India. He passed away on December 26, 2025 in Wayanad, marking the close of a remarkable chapter defined by integrity and warmth.

With a career spanning more than five and a half decades, Victor Dey was one of South India’s most respected planters. He began his journey at the age of 20, dedicating his life to tea and coffee plantations across the region. His deep understanding of the land and people saw him rise to the position of General Manager of Aswathy Plantations, and later as custodian of a 400-acre coffee and spice estate in Wayanad, Kerala. Widely admired within planter circles, he was among the early members of the Bygone Plantation Days community and also served as a Director of the prestigious Ootacamund Club in Ooty.

Beyond plantations, Victor Dey was a quiet trailblazer in Wayanad’s tourism story. In 1999, together with his wife Ranjini, he transformed their restored colonial plantation bungalow into Tranquil Homestay. Long before homestays became a recognised segment, the Deys opened their home to travellers, offering not just accommodation but an immersive plantation experience rooted in warmth and authenticity. Their natural flair for hosting honed over years of welcoming friends and family soon became a benchmark for genuine hospitality in Kerala.

Victor was also a founding member of the Wayanad Tourism Organization, contributing thoughtfully during the region’s formative tourism years. His influence went far beyond business; he helped define Wayanad’s identity as a destination rooted in culture, nature, and sincerity. As noted by the Tourism India magazine team, his vision and dedication were instrumental in shaping the region’s tourism landscape, with contributions that were truly immeasurable.

At the heart of everything Victor Dey did was a simple principle passed down by his father: “No matter where you are, be a gentleman.” He lived by this creed without compromise. His favourite saying “The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention” captured his belief in action, honesty, and service. Deeply connected to nature, he cherished open spaces, lush greenery, and the companionship of his beloved dogs, once remarking that life without greenery around his home was unimaginable.

Victor Bernard Dey is survived by his wife Ranjini; his son Nikhil and daughter-in-law Deepa; his daughter Nisha and son-in-law Ajay Mathulla. Together, they carry forward his legacy of dignity, hospitality, and respect for both land and people.
