India’s travel and tourism industry is collectively grieving in the wake of the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight AI-171. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, claiming the lives of nearly all 242 people on board and over 50 individuals on the ground. The devastating incident has sent shockwaves across the nation and the global aviation community, prompting leading industry associations to express profound sorrow and pledge solidarity with the affected families and stakeholders.


The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH), the apex body representing India’s entire tourism sector, released a heartfelt statement conveying its deep anguish. Emphasizing the tragedy’s national scale and its profound impact on the travel and tourism community, FAITH underscored Air India’s significant legacy. The federation called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the crash, affirming its confidence in the national carrier’s capacity to rebuild public trust. FAITH also extended its support to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Air India, and the emergency response teams, commending their tireless efforts amidst overwhelming loss.


The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) echoed these sentiments, describing the incident as an “extremely painful moment” for the tourism fraternity. In an official statement, IATO highlighted Air India’s crucial role in connecting India globally and fostering the growth of Indian tourism. The association conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and urged the airline to provide comprehensive assistance and clarity through a prompt inquiry.


The Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) also conveyed its profound sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the families of all passengers and crew. TAAI characterized the loss as “devastating” and reaffirmed its readiness to support the victims’ families and contribute to ongoing recovery efforts. The association stressed the critical importance of community solidarity during such national crises.


In a statement, Mr. K.B. Kachru, President of the Hotel Association of India (HAI) and Chairman – South Asia of Radisson Hotel Group, expressed that the tragedy has “shaken the entire nation,” offering condolences on behalf of the hospitality sector. HAI commended the bravery and dedication of emergency personnel. It also pledged ongoing support from its member hotels, offering shelter, assistance, and comfort to those impacted by the disaster. Kachru affirmed, “As a national body, we extend our full support to Air India and all those working tirelessly in this difficult time.”
