India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) orchestrated a Run for Unity in honor of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, 2023, as part of their ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ initiative. Enthusiastic participation came from the students of the Ashok Institute of Hospitality & Tourism Management. The event was inaugurated by Mr. M. R. Synrem, IAS, Managing Director of ITDC, who inspired the students and officially kicked off the run.
National Unity Day, celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in India, is dedicated to commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the country’s first Home Minister, known as the “Iron Man of India” for his remarkable leadership during the integration of princely states and the 1947 India-Pakistan War. This day was officially declared as National Unity Day by the Government of India in 2014.
The historical significance of National Unity Day lies in recognizing and reaffirming the unity, resilience, and security of the nation against actual and potential threats. Sardar Patel’s exceptional efforts in persuading nearly all 565 self-governing princely states to join the Union of India after gaining independence make this celebration even more meaningful.
On National Unity Day, a solemn pledge is recited in government offices, emphasizing the commitment to preserve the nation’s unity, integrity, and security. This pledge underscores the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in unifying the country. All government offices, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and public institutions are mandated to organize pledge-taking ceremonies on October 31 in observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. Additionally, the Ministry of Human Resource Development encourages schools and colleges to administer the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to motivate students to contribute to the country’s unity and integrity.
