Kerala Tourism’s Responsible Tourism Mission has initiated a unique Souvenir Challenge to enrich the tourist experience by curating a collection of charming and eco-friendly artworks for visitors to cherish long after their trip to the state.
In a bid to encourage creativity and craftsmanship, the maker of the finest souvenir will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, with Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 for the second and third-place winners respectively. Additionally, one artist from each of the 14 districts will receive Rs 10,000, while a hundred artists will benefit from specialized training to refine their skills in souvenir crafting.
“This endeavor seeks to assemble a delightful array of artworks that resonate with tourists, bolstering Kerala Tourism’s reputation and spotlighting our rich artistic and cultural heritage worldwide,” remarked Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohamed Riyas.
Under the guidance of the Responsible Tourism Mission, the competition mandates that souvenirs be crafted exclusively from eco-friendly materials, bearing motifs inspired by Kerala’s socio-cultural tapestry or the distinct historical, cultural, or artistic essence of their place of origin.
The specifications stipulate that souvenirs should weigh no more than 500 grams and measure no larger than 20×15 cm, ensuring ease of transport for buyers. They should also be flat in shape, facilitating framing and display at home.
In terms of themes, each souvenir should encapsulate an aspect of Kerala’s identity or the unique character of its locality or district. Artists are required to document the materials used in their creation and the underlying theme or narrative they represent.
Participation in the competition is open to all permanent residents of Kerala. Interested individuals must submit a prototype of their souvenir along with personal details such as name, email, postal address, contact number, and a copy of their Aadhaar card. Submissions can be made in person at the state office of the RT Mission or sent via post, reaching the destination by 5 pm on February 28, 2024.
