The Government of Maharashtra has appointed Mr. Mangesh Hiraman Joshi, a 2015 batch Indian Administrative Officer from Maharashtra Cadre, as Director of the Directorate of Tourism, following a recent administrative reshuffle. He officially assumed charge at the Directorate of Tourism headquarters in Mumbai on April 21, 2026.
An accomplished administrator with extensive experience in public administration, governance, institutional development, and strategic planning, Mr. Joshi brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Director General at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA), Pune, where he played a key role in administrative reforms, capacity building, policy implementation, and the training of civil servants.
Earlier in his distinguished career, Mr. Joshi held several important assignments in district administration, including Additional Collector in Sindhudurg and Pune, Deputy District Election Officer, and Sub-Divisional Officer, gaining extensive grassroots experience in development planning, governance, and public service delivery.
Speaking after assuming office, Mr. Joshi said, “Maharashtra is a state with immense tourism potential. Our priority will be the effective implementation of existing tourism policies while promoting Maharashtra’s diverse destinations at the global level. We are committed to positioning the state as a unique, safe, and sustainable tourism destination, generating local employment, and accelerating economic development through tourism.”
He further emphasized that the Directorate would undertake focused initiatives to preserve and promote Maharashtra’s iconic forts, extensive coastline, eco-tourism destinations, and rich cultural heritage, while enhancing tourism infrastructure and visitor experiences through modern amenities and sustainable development practices.
Mr. Joshi holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). Widely respected for his integrity, administrative acumen, and reform-oriented leadership, he is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Maharashtra’s position as one of India’s leading tourism destinations and enhancing its global tourism footprint.
