Mauritius, the evergreen bucket-list offshore destination that shares robust historical and cultural ties with India is back in the reckoning in the post-pandemic times. In its latest initiative, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) has drawn up plans to concentrate on tier-II cities of India in the current year.

Sunil Mathapati, Country Manager-India, MTPA commented, “Mauritius Tourism has always been at the forefront in boosting the destination across major Indian metros with its awareness campaigns in the business-to-consumer realm. Tactical campaigns with the Indian travel trade have been a part of its ongoing activity. The outbound figures from Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru have been amazing. We intend to popularize the destination with the support of branding, promotions and business-to-consumer meetings. For our promotional activities, we are looking at markets like Pune, Kolhapur, Rajkot, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore and Cochin.”

Mauritius enjoys being known as “Little India” since around 68 per cent of its populace boasts of Indian origin. Mathapati said, “India has always been a significant destination for Mauritius owing to the strong historical and cultural ties. Festivities, cuisine and the residents of Mauritius make the destination- A Home Away From Home for Indian travellers looking ahead to spend their vacations.” Mathapati further said that Mauritius as a destination has a commendable presence in European countries, the Middle East and South Africa.

In the post-pandemic world, tourist attractions have been upgraded in Mauritius. Mathapati added, “There are a plethora of attractions for tourists to indulge in like Casela and La Vallee des Couleurs Nature Park. One can dive into luxurious adventures like submarine rides that have been spruced up to provide a lifetime experience for travellers. Besides, there are adventure activities including trekking, water sports, helicopter rides, deep sea fishing, catamaran rides and sky diving.”

There has been a significant rise in flight operations from India to Mauritius since last year. Mathapati added, “Air Mauritius has three direct flights from New Delhi to Mauritius and six weekly flights from Mumbai to Mauritius. Air Mauritius is all set to come up with direct flights from Chennai to Mauritius from April onwards. Vistara operates four weekly flights from Mumbai to Mauritius. The Indian tourist arrivals stood at 53,836 last year and we are looking ahead to have about 85,000 Indian travellers in the existing year.”
