Kerala’s tourism and cultural sectors have a new steward. P. C. Vishnunadh has been sworn in as the state’s Minister for Tourism and Culture, stepping into one of the government’s most consequential portfolios at a time when Kerala is doubling down on tourism as an engine of economic growth.
Vishnunadh – a lawyer, legislator, and Congress stalwart – brings legal acumen and grassroots political experience to a role that sits at the intersection of economic development and cultural preservation. His appointment signals the state government’s intent to sustain and sharpen Kerala’s edge as a global travel destination.
A Portfolio with High Stakes
Kerala Tourism’s “God’s Own Country” brand is one of the most recognizable destination identities in Asia. The sector is a major contributor to employment and foreign exchange, and the state has been actively broadening its tourism offerings well beyond its traditional backwaters-and-beaches image. Current growth areas include Ayurveda and wellness travel, cruise tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), adventure tourism, caravan tourism, and community-based responsible tourism. Digital nomad initiatives have also gained traction as the state looks to attract a new generation of long-stay visitors.
Industry observers expect Vishnunadh to accelerate momentum across these verticals while pushing for stronger private-sector collaboration – a partnership model that has long underpinned Kerala’s tourism success.
What to Watch Under His Leadership
Those tracking the portfolio will be looking at how the new minister handles a broad mandate that spans infrastructure upgrades, destination marketing in international markets, medical value travel, and the revitalization of cultural institutions. Support for festivals, performing arts, museums, and creative industries also falls within his remit – areas where policy attention can have an outsized impact on Kerala’s soft-power profile.
The Man Behind the Portfolio
Born in Kottarakkara, Kollam district on March 30, 1978, Vishnunadh represents the Kundara constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He holds a B.Com and an LL.B. from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. His political roots run deep – he came up through the Kerala Students Union, served as President of the Kerala Youth Congress, and went on to become Working President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
He is married to Kanaka Ha Ma, and the couple shares a noted interest in literature and the performing arts – a background that may well inform his approach to the cultural side of his new portfolio.
Industry leaders across Kerala’s hospitality and tourism sectors have welcomed the appointment warmly, expressing optimism that his tenure will mark a new chapter for one of India’s most compelling travel destinations.
