Qatar Airways has solidified its position as a major player in global aviation by announcing its largest-ever aircraft order with Boeing and the biggest widebody engine agreement in GE Aerospace’s history. The landmark Boeing deal involves up to 210 widebody aircraft, encompassing a firm order for 130 Boeing 787 Dreamliners – the largest Dreamliner order to date – and 30 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, along with options for an an additional 50 Boeing 787 and 777-9 jets.
Simultaneously, Qatar Airways has reached an agreement with GE Aerospace for over 400 engines, including 60 GE9X and 260 GEnx engines, in addition to options and spare parts. These engines will power the airline’s new generation of Boeing 777-9 and 787 aircraft, marking the most significant widebody engine procurement in GE Aerospace’s history.
These agreements were announced during a visit by then U.S. President Donald Trump with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar.
According to Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, this historic aircraft order with Boeing represents a crucial step in the airline’s strategy to invest in the most modern, fuel-efficient, and environmentally conscious fleet in the aviation industry. He emphasized that this investment will enable Qatar Airways to meet growing demand and seamlessly connect passengers worldwide with an unparalleled level of service. Al-Meer also highlighted that this significant order, following two years of record commercial performance, is about building long-term strength to maintain their exceptional product and customer experience.
The Boeing order includes:
130 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, known for their long-range capabilities, exceptional fuel efficiency (offering a 25% improvement), and enhanced passenger comfort.
30 Boeing 777-9s, recognized as the world’s largest twin-engine aircraft, designed to set new benchmarks in efficiency by reducing fuel consumption and emissions by 25% compared to their predecessors, while also elevating the passenger experience.
Options for an additional 50 Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft.
Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed Boeing’s honor in receiving this record-breaking order from Qatar Airways. She stated that this order will secure Qatar Airways’ future fleet with Boeing’s leading widebody aircraft family at its core. Boeing looks forward to a continued partnership, building 787s and 777s for Qatar Airways into the next decade as the airline expands its global connectivity with superior efficiency and passenger comfort.
Qatar Airways currently operates a fleet of over 150 Boeing aircraft, including 777 and 787 passenger planes and 777 Freighters. This new acquisition will position Qatar Airways as the largest Dreamliner operator in the Middle East.
The engine agreement with GE Aerospace further solidifies the company’s commitment to Qatar’s thriving aviation sector. This deal builds upon a previous order for 188 GE9X engines, bringing the total to 248. The addition of GEnx engines for the Boeing 787 fleet complements an existing order for 124 engines, reinforcing the airline’s focus on operational efficiency and performance. The two agreements also encompass service contracts for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of both the GEnx and GE9X engines.
Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer stated that the agreement with GE Aerospace reflects Qatar Airways’ confidence in the performance of the GE9X and GEnx engines to power their Boeing 777-9 and 787 aircraft fleets. He noted that these next-generation engines are critical to maintaining a modern and efficient fleet, supporting Qatar Airways’ ambitious future growth plans and their valued partnership with GE Aerospace.
H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, expressed his deep honor in strengthening their relationship with Qatar Airways and gratitude for their trust in GE with this unprecedented widebody engine order. He lauded the GE9X and GEnx engines as engineering marvels, known for their durability and reliability in powering long-distance flights. Culp also acknowledged the support of then President Trump for this significant agreement.
