Sri Lanka Strengthens Its Global MICE Ambitions at International Expo 2026

Sri Lanka showcased its growing potential as a destination for international business events at the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau at Shangri-La Colombo from October 4 to 9. The event brought together more than 120 hosted MICE and travel operators, along with media representatives from 26 countries, creating opportunities to build partnerships and enhance the island nation’s visibility in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market.

The Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 was inaugurated in the presence of Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, with Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha, Ministry Secretary Aruni Ranaraja and representatives from the tourism and business sectors attending the ceremony.

The expo programme began on Monday (October 5) with a MICE Business Forum and welcome reception in Colombo. The Business Forum highlighted Sri Lanka’s strengths as a destination for corporate gatherings, international conferences, incentive travel programmes and exhibitions. Presentations focused on the country’s expanding conference infrastructure, established hospitality sector, international connectivity and diverse tourism offerings, underlining its ability to cater to business events of varying sizes and requirements.

Colombo emerged as a key focus of the discussions, with its combination of international-standard hotels, convention facilities, transport networks and professional hospitality services offering a strong foundation for MICE tourism. The city’s growing portfolio of venues and accommodation options enables event planners to develop programmes tailored to different budgets, audiences and business objectives.

Among the prominent venues highlighted were the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Centre (BMICH), Cinnamon Life and Lotus Tower, alongside other convention facilities and properties operated by international hotel chains. From luxury hotels and boutique establishments to budget accommodation and eco-lodges, Sri Lanka offers a varied hospitality landscape to meet the needs of international delegates and event organisers.

Beyond its conference infrastructure, the country’s distinctive appeal lies in its ability to combine business engagements with leisure and cultural experiences. Its beaches, wildlife reserves, national parks and historic sites offer opportunities for incentive programmes, post-conference excursions and customised experiences. Colombo’s culinary scene and entertainment options further add to its appeal for international business travellers seeking more than a conventional conference experience.

The forum also emphasised the role of government tourism agencies, professional associations and private-sector stakeholders in strengthening the country’s MICE ecosystem. Cooperation across the industry is essential to improving service standards, developing competitive event offerings and The programme continued with the official opening ceremony and business-to-business (B2B) meetings, bringing more than 125 Sri Lankan MICE suppliers and service providers together with hosted international buyers. The interactions were designed to facilitate direct engagement between local industry players and overseas representatives, encouraging new partnerships and business collaborations.

The participation of industry representatives from 26 countries provided a platform for networking, exchanging expertise and exploring new commercial opportunities. By connecting international buyers with Sri Lankan tourism and hospitality stakeholders, the expo sought to encourage business partnerships and expand the country’s reach across key source markets.

As part of the initiative, the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau has organised a post-event familiarisation tour of the Cultural Triangle for hosted buyers. The tour aims to highlight the country’s rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes and diverse tourism experiences, while demonstrating how these attractions complement its MICE infrastructure and facilities to create an integrated offering for international business events.

With its combination of conference facilities, hospitality expertise, international access and varied destination experiences, Sri Lanka is seeking to establish a stronger foothold in the global MICE sector. The Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 marked an opportunity to communicate these strengths to the international market and position the island as a destination where business events can be complemented by memorable cultural and leisure experiences.
