How has being a woman influenced your journey as an entrepreneur in the tourism industry?

My gender has profoundly shaped my entrepreneurial journey in the tourism sector. While gender should not be a limiting factor, being a woman in this field has led me to approach business with empathy, understanding, and a focus on creating meaningful experiences. The tourism industry thrives on hospitality and service, areas where women often excel. My passion for travel and dedication to providing exceptional service have been key drivers of my success. Additionally, my technical background has enabled me to leverage technology effectively, enhancing the efficiency and innovation of my business operations.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Let’s Go Camp and how the organization came to be?

Let’s Go For a Camp was born from a deep-seated love for travel and a desire to redefine the traditional travel agency model. Dissatisfied with the narrow focus of many agencies on sightseeing alone, we set out to create an organization centered around crafting immersive and meaningful travel experiences. Our inspiration stems from our belief in the transformative power of travel and the desire to share our passion for exploration with others. Our aim is to build a community of travelers who connect not only with each other but also with the world around them, fostering personal growth and enriching experiences.

What motivated you to focus specifically on women’s-only travel and empowerment through travel?

The motivation to focus on women’s-only travel and empowerment emerged from a recognition of the unique challenges faced by women and girls in accessing and enjoying travel experiences. As a woman myself, I observed firsthand the societal barriers and cultural norms that often limit women’s freedom and confidence in exploring the world. This realization inspired me to create a space where women could feel safe, supported, and empowered to embark on their own travel journeys. Through Let’s Go For a Camp, we seek to provide women with the tools, resources, and community they need to overcome these obstacles and embrace the transformative power of travel.

What challenges have you encountered in running a women-led Community Tourism Organization, and how have you overcome them?

Running a women-led Community Tourism Organization has presented its share of challenges, from navigating societal expectations and cultural norms to overcoming logistical and operational obstacles. One of the primary challenges we have faced is overcoming gender stereotypes and biases that limit women’s participation and leadership in the tourism industry. Additionally, operating in remote or scenic locations has posed logistical challenges such as transportation, accommodation, and communication. However, we have overcome these challenges by fostering a supportive and inclusive organizational culture, building strong partnerships with local communities and stakeholders, and leveraging technology and innovation to streamline operations and enhance the guest experience. Through perseverance, creativity, and collaboration, we have been able to overcome these challenges and continue to grow and thrive as a women-led Community Tourism Organization.

Additionally, I employ technology for task management and guest feedback to respond swiftly and effectively to any operational needs.

We showcase the myriad experiences our hotel offers, catering to different cultural preferences and highlighting our commitment to gender equality. What measures do you take in human resources to foster a supportive and inclusive work environment for women, including addressing issues like equal pay and career advancement?

In human resources, we prioritize creating policies that ensure equal opportunities for women, such as unbiased recruitment processes, equal pay, and clear paths to career advancement. How do you navigate challenges such as gender stereotypes or biases in the hospitality industry, particularly in roles traditionally dominated by men?

To navigate gender stereotypes, we encourage an environment where merit dictates progress. We showcase success stories of women in traditionally male-dominated roles and offer workshops that address and dismantle these stereotypes. This has helped create a more equitable workplace culture.

As a woman in hospitality leadership, what steps do you take to mentor and support other women in their career advancement within the industry?

As a leader, I take an active role in mentoring women within our organization by providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and facilitating networking opportunities. I also advocate for transparent promotion processes and support programs that are specifically designed to boost women’s career progression.

How do you ensure a healthy work-life balance for yourself and your team in demanding roles such as hotel operations or marketing?

Ensuring a healthy work-life balance involves flexible scheduling, promoting a culture where taking leave for personal needs is respected, and providing resources for stress management. I lead by example, maintaining my work-life balance and encouraging my team to do the same.

What innovations or advancements do you foresee in the hospitality industry that could further empower women in roles like housekeeping, marketing, and human resources?

I envision innovations in the hospitality industry that support women’s advancement, including AI for unbiased hiring, professional development platforms tailored for women, and leveraging virtual reality for safety training, which could be particularly empowering for women in all roles.

  • Empowering Women in Tourism: Driving Sustainable Change

Tourism is a powerful tool for economic growth, cultural exchange, and global understanding. As the tourism industry continues to expand, the focus on inclusivity and empowerment becomes increasingly crucial. Women empowerment in tourism is not just about creating equal opportunities; it’s about harnessing the untapped potential of women as contributors, decision-makers, and beneficiaries in this dynamic sector.

Empowering women in tourism opens doors to economic opportunities that can transform communities. Women often play a significant role in local economies, and tourism can provide avenues for them to participate actively. From entrepreneurship in local markets to leadership roles in the hospitality sector, empowering women economically is a catalyst for broader societal development.

Tourism presents unique opportunities for women to start and grow their businesses. Whether it’s a local craft shop, a bed-and-breakfast, or a tour guide service, women entrepreneurs contribute to the diversification of the tourism landscape. Governments and organizations can support women-owned businesses through targeted funding, training programs, and networking initiatives.

Investing in education and skill development for women in tourism is a key aspect of empowerment. This can include training programs for roles in the hospitality industry, tour guiding, sustainable tourism practices, and more. By providing access to education and training, women can enhance their skills, boost their confidence, and actively participate in various aspects of the tourism value chain.

While women make up a significant portion of the tourism workforce, they are often underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles. Empowering women in tourism involves breaking down barriers and promoting gender diversity at all levels of the industry. Companies and organizations can implement policies that encourage equal opportunities, mentorship programs, and leadership training for women.

Women are often deeply connected to their communities, and their empowerment in tourism can lead to more sustainable and community-driven practices. By involving women in decision-making processes related to tourism development, there is a higher likelihood of creating initiatives that benefit both the local population and the environment.

Tourism businesses can actively contribute to women’s empowerment by incorporating gender equality into their brand values. This not only attracts socially conscious travelers but also sets a positive example for other businesses in the industry. Recognizing and showcasing the contributions of women within the tourism sector can inspire positive change and foster a more inclusive environment.

Empowering women in tourism is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic move for the sustainable growth of the industry. By creating equal opportunities, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting leadership roles for women, the tourism sector can harness the full potential of its diverse workforce. As we work towards a more inclusive and equitable future, women empowerment in tourism stands as a cornerstone for positive change, enriching both the industry and the communities it touches.
