UP Tourism Champions Traditional Jute Craft and Women’s Empowerment in Rural Communities

In a significant move to empower rural women and revitalize traditional crafts, Uttar Pradesh Tourism has launched a grassroots initiative focusing on jute-based handicrafts and fostering self-reliance. As part of this effort, a two-day jute bag-making workshop was recently conducted in Ruiya Garhi, a designated tourism village in the Hardoi district. The program saw enthusiastic participation from ten local women, receiving hands-on training in jute bag design and production within a supportive and inspiring environment.

This workshop is a key component of a broader strategy by UP Tourism to promote skill development and community-based tourism, helping participants develop both practical skills and creative confidence.

Blending Tradition with Sustainable Livelihood

“Jute is not only eco-friendly, but also a symbol of sustainable craftsmanship,” noted a spokesperson from UP Tourism. “By equipping women with these skills, we aim to support self-help groups and home-based industries while celebrating India’s rich tradition of textile-based art.”

This initiative aligns with UP Tourism’s ongoing mission to connect local culture, crafts, and communities with economic opportunities. The goal is to transform tourism villages like Ruiya Garhi into vibrant centers of heritage-based livelihood.

Jute in Uttar Pradesh: Small in Production, Big in Potential

While Uttar Pradesh may not be a leading jute-producing state in terms of cultivation, it has firmly established itself as a thriving hub for jute-based products and souvenir manufacturing. Cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, and Prayagraj are home to numerous artisans and small-scale producers who create high-quality jute goods.

Though jute cultivation within the state is relatively limited and primarily occurs during the Rabi season (November to February) in areas with less rainfall, the availability of raw materials through trade networks supports a robust craft industry.

A Glimpse into the Local Jute Economy

Manufacturers & Dealers: Online directories like Justdial and IndiaMART list a multitude of suppliers and artisans offering a wide range of jute products, including handbags, lunch bags, and customized or intricately embroidered designer pieces across Uttar Pradesh.

Diverse Product Range: The versatility of jute is evident in the innovative product range available, from eco-friendly handbags, coasters, and wall hangings to practical utility items like lunch bags and bottle carriers. Many products are further enhanced with beads, embroidery, or hand painting, elevating them from everyday items to unique collectible souvenirs.

Price Points: Jute handbags typically range from ₹300 to ₹800, while lunch bags are generally priced between ₹150 and ₹400. Custom-made and designer bags can range from ₹500 to ₹2000, depending on their design complexity and materials.

Crafted by Women for a Sustainable Future: A significant number of these jute products are crafted by women-led self-help groups, particularly in Varanasi and other rural districts. This blend of tradition and entrepreneurship allows these women to earn sustainable incomes and gain a stronger sense of identity and independence through their craft.

A Model for Responsible Tourism

With the global rise in eco-tourism and sustainable travel, Uttar Pradesh’s jute initiatives align perfectly with responsible tourism principles. By encouraging the use of natural materials, promoting women artisans, and offering authentic, locally made souvenirs, the state contributes to a travel experience deeply rooted in cultural connection and environmental awareness.

Plans are underway to expand such training workshops to other tourism villages across Uttar Pradesh.
