Constantly expanding the flight network connecting India with Vietnam, VietJet, has announced the opening of a new route in India from Ho Chi Minh City to Kochi (Cochin), effective from August 12, 2023, with a frequency of four flights per week every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with Airbus 320 connecting Kochi to Vietnam, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Seoul, Narita, Bali, and many more destinations. The air distance from Kochi to Ho Chi Minh City is 3,304km (1,784 nm). Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Vietnamese Ambassador to India said that the opening of the route connecting Kochi and Ho Chi Minh City by Vietjet is a breakthrough, creating a new impetus for economic trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and south India.
“With the favorable geographical location of Ho Chi Minh City in particular, and Vietnam in general, visitors will easily explore destinations across Vietnam as well as from Vietnam to other countries and regions around the world,” said Mr. Hai.
Mr. Jay L Lingeswara, Vice President of Commerce, Vietjet has said with this new route, Vietjet will increase connectivity between Vietnam and India. Kochi will be VietJet Air’s 4th online city in India after Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. “We expect that Vietjet will make significant contributions to the tourism growth of Kerala, India, and Vietnam via its wide range of products and services accompanied by competitive and reasonable fares,” he said. Vietjet’s new route is expected to bring about 10,000 more passengers from the southern region of India to Vietnam in 2023. The service, utilizing Airbus A320 aircraft, will operate four times a week.
Mr. Suhas S. IAS, Managing Director of Cochin International Airport Ltd. said that now we have a total of 45 flight services from Kochi to Southeast Asian countries and this will benefit the nonresident Indian travellers and tourists. The commencement of flight connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City to these two South Indian cities will benefit tourists, business travellers, and expatriates, who are traveling to and fro in other South Asian destinations and beyond. Now two airline companies based in Vietnam, Vietjet and Vietnam Airlines along with Indian carrier IndiGo are flying between various Indian cities to Vietnam cities Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
According to an industry report, Vietjet has the highest share with 54.8% capacity, while Vietnam Airlines has 23.6% and IndiGo has 21.6%. Vietjet started its Indian operation in late 2019 in Delhi from Hanoi (HAN) and Ho Chi Minh City. The airline temporarily stopped its operation during the COVID pandemic but resumed connectivity in April 2022 to Delhi, and by June 2022, the flights from both HAN and SGN to Mumbai were restarted. VietJet has also started its operations in Ahmedabad in September 2022 and Kochi will be its fourth Indian city. With the new direct route from Ho Chi Minh City to Kochi and Tiruchirappalli, Vietjet has officially increased its total number of flights connecting Vietnam with India to nearly 70 flights per week.
