SriLankan Airlines is doubling down on its efforts to attract Indian travelers with the launch of its exclusive Ramayana Trail Package, a spiritual journey through 20 sacred sites in Sri Lanka associated with the epic Ramayana. This initiative, aimed at promoting religious tourism, was officially launched at a high-profile event in Delhi recently, with Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Mrs. Kshenuka Senewiratne, emphasizing the deep cultural and spiritual ties between the two nations.

“The Ramayana is not merely a story; it is a rich tapestry of culture, spirituality, and heritage,” said Mrs. Senewiratne. “It has inspired and guided people for centuries, while fostering strong connections between India and Sri Lanka.”

The trail includes iconic locations such as the Seetha Amman Temple, where Sita is believed to have prayed during her captivity, and Rumassala Hill, where a fragment of the Himalayas is said to have landed, dropped by Hanuman. Other highlights include the cave where Ravana hid Sita and the legendary Adam’s Bridge (Rama Setu), a symbol of devotion and resilience. These sites provide travelers with a chance to connect deeply with their spiritual heritage while experiencing Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and cultural legacy.

Mr. Richard Nuttall, Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines

Mr. Richard Nuttall, Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, highlighted India’s importance as the airline’s largest market, noting that Indian tourists now make up nearly 20% of all arrivals in Sri Lanka. Speaking at the event, Nuttall remarked:

“We are pleased to expand our footprint in India with the Ramayana Trail. This exclusive package is designed to offer Indian travelers a unique blend of spirituality and cultural exploration, showcasing Sri Lanka as a destination deeply connected to their heritage.”

SriLankan Airlines currently operates 88 weekly flights to nine Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Nuttall also shared that the airline plans to increase flight frequencies and improve schedules to make travel more convenient for Indian tourists. The airline is even exploring the possibility of adding new destinations in India, signaling its commitment to the market’s vast growth potential.

The Ramayana Trail is a cornerstone of SriLankan Airlines’ strategy to revive tourism from India, which has seen strong growth this year but remains below pre-pandemic levels. The initiative combines spiritual exploration with modern conveniences. Travelers will enjoy stays in premium 4- and 5-star hotels, guided tours led by experts in Ramayana mythology, and seamless connectivity with direct flights from major Indian cities.

As part of the promotional campaign, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau Chairman, Mr. Buddhika Hewawasam, expressed gratitude to Indian travelers for their consistent support during challenging times. “India has always been our largest source market, and Indian tourists hold a special place in our hearts. The Ramayana Trail is yet another way to strengthen these ties while inviting them to explore the timeless beauty of our country,” Hewawasam said.

The High Commissioner added that the Ramayana has historically been a bridge between India and Sri Lanka, reinforcing shared values and people-to-people connections. She called the trail an opportunity for travelers to rediscover the enduring relevance of this epic while enjoying the warm hospitality and vibrant culture of Sri Lanka.

With its rich mix of mythological exploration, luxury travel, and cultural immersion, the Ramayana Trail Package is set to position Sri Lanka as a premier destination for Indian religious tourism. For Indian travelers seeking a spiritual journey coupled with convenience and comfort, this initiative offers an unparalleled experience.
