Mechukha wins India’s Best Mountain Tourism Destination award

Mechukha in Arunachal Pradesh, a destination developed under the ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’ scheme by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has become India’s best mountain tourism destination at India Today Travel Awards.  Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Government of India presented the prestigious award to Adong Moyong and Marto Bagra of Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Department in a colourful function held at New Delhi on March 28.

A significant milestone in Mechukha’s evolution as a tourism destination is set to attract more attention among potential travellers worldwide. What is certain to lure travellers here is the uniquely pristine and untouched natural landscape and its engaging cultural heritage that can be experienced through local lifestyles (homestays), Buddhist traditions, cuisines and more. Treks categorised from easy to moderate enable travellers to immerse themselves in pure-fresh nature as they brush through villages and farmlands.

The exciting vibe of the region can be experienced through a series of events that promise to take Mechukha to greater heights – Mechukha Adventure Festival, ‘Adventure Mechukha – National Racing Championships’ and others.

Mr. Pasang Dorjee Sona, Minister for Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh was excited that Mechukha was recognised at the national level. He said, “I am very happy and thrilled at Mechukha winning this prestigious award and standing out among other iconic destinations. The North East is India’s best-kept secret, and Mechukha is a brand-new destination that can create new paradigms in Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism scenario. We are committed to ensuring that Mechukha develops into a sought-after destination for the discerning traveller”.

The Minister also said that Mechukha is being promoted for ‘slow travel’, so that travellers spend more time at the destination enabling economic benefits to reach all segments of the community. Deputy Commissioner -Shi-Yomi District Mr Liyi Bagra informed that Mechukha is undergoing transformative development under ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’. “I am confident that the upcoming redevelopment of Mechukha Adventure Park under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 will ensure nature lovers and adventure seekers experience Mechukha’s landscape from unique vantage points. So also will Mechukha Cultural Haat provide travellers with rich insights into the cultural traditions of the region. In Phase 2 we are developing an Artist’s Village at Galling Village, thus opening up yet another untouched area for experiential tourism. This recognition for Mechukha has come at the right time even as these upcoming projects will be ready to help travellers have a world-class experience”.
