Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Successfully Hosts MICE Roadshows Across Three Indian Cities

MICE and Business Tourism Accounts for Approximately 10% of All Arrivals from India

The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB), functioning under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, successfully organised three impactful MICE Roadshows and Evening Networking Sessions in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai during the last week of May 2026. The initiative forms part of a focused and sustained effort to strengthen Sri Lanka’s position as a preferred MICE destination in India – one of its most important source markets.

The roadshow circuit opened on 25th May 2026 at Crowne Plaza Ahmedabad City Centre, followed by Kolkata on 27th May 2026 at the ITC Sonar, and concluded on 29th May 2026 at the Pullman Chennai Anna Salai. Each event brought together MICE specialists, wedding planners, professional conference organisers, and corporate buyers, creating a focused platform for meaningful business dialogue and destination promotion.

A 24-member Sri Lankan delegation comprising leading tour operators and hoteliers participated across the three cities, showcasing the country’s diverse attractions, world-class meeting infrastructure, and unique hospitality experiences. Cultural performances by a Sri Lankan troupe added a vibrant dimension to the evenings, offering attendees a first-hand glimpse of the country’s rich heritage and traditions.

India – Sri Lanka’s Most Strategic MICE Source Market

India continues to be the single largest source market for Sri Lanka tourism. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, a total of 5,31,511 Indian tourists visited Sri Lanka in 2025 – representing 22% of the country’s total tourist arrivals – marking the highest number of Indian arrivals ever recorded. Sri Lanka’s total tourism earnings surpassed USD 3.2 billion during the same year.

The momentum has carried into 2026, with Sri Lanka welcoming 10,10,807 tourists between January and end-May, of which 2,45,981 were from India – reflecting strong and growing demand for travel between the two neighbouring countries.

MICE and business tourism currently accounts for approximately 10% of total tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka, underscoring the sub-sector’s growing importance and its significant potential for future growth.

Travel between the two countries is highly convenient, with SriLankan Airlines operating 90 weekly flights connecting Sri Lanka with nine Indian cities. IndiGo and Air India further strengthen the network with daily direct flights to Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai – ensuring seamless accessibility for both business and leisure travellers.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, said, “Sri Lanka is an ideal MICE destination due to its close proximity and strong connectivity with India, making it a cost-effective and attractive choice for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions. These roadshows will further showcase Sri Lanka’s growth and strengthen tourism and business ties between the two countries.”
