Nepali Media Delegation Discovers the Soul of Lucknow at Bara Imambara

Uttar Pradesh Tourism recently hosted Twenty journalists from Nepal and they travelled to Lucknow from Kathmandu on a familiarisation visit that took them deep into the heart of Uttar Pradesh’s architectural and cultural legacy, with the majestic Bara Imambara as the centrepiece of their experience.

The delegation, representing one of India’s closest neighbours and a growing source of cultural tourism, explored the iconic eighteenth-century monument that has long defined Lucknow’s identity on the world stage. The visit was conceived as an initiative to strengthen cross-border cultural ties and open new corridors of tourism exchange between Nepal and Uttar Pradesh – two geographies bound by history, faith, and shared civilisational roots.

For journalist Srijana Rai from Kathmandu, the experience went well beyond architecture. Standing within the labyrinthine corridors of Bara Imambara, she described an encounter with a city that wears its heritage lightly but carries it deeply – a place where grandeur is matched by warmth, and where every stone seems to hold a story worth telling. Her reflections echoed a sentiment shared widely across the delegation: that Lucknow’s hospitality is as remarkable as its monuments.

Fellow traveller Suveksha, also making the journey from Kathmandu, found Lucknow revealing itself through multiple registers – its refined culinary traditions, the distinctive grace of its Nawabi architecture, and the unhurried depth of its cultural character. Her journey unfolded through meaningful encounters, timeless spaces, and flavours that lingered long after the meal was over.

The familiarisation visit served its purpose on every level. For the Nepali journalists, it offered a richer, more personal understanding of Uttar Pradesh as a destination worthy of international attention. For the state, it placed its heritage before an influential audience that will carry these stories back to readers, viewers, and travellers across Nepal.

Lucknow has always been a city that rewards those who look beyond the obvious. For this Nepali delegation, the journey has only just begun.
