Mr. John Thomas has taken over as the General Manager of Southern Railway on September 19, 2019. He is of 1982 batch of Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE).
Mr. Thomas started his career in Indian Railways in 1984 and he has held several important assignments in Central Railway, South Central Railway and Southern Railway over three decades of service. Prior to his present posting, Mr. Thomas served as Additional General Manager, South Central Railway. During his tenure there Mr. Thomas initiated various innovative measures towards handling issues concerning public grievances, review of zonal performance on critical aspects such as safety, security, punctuality, operational efficiency, and business. He was also instrumental in handling the massive relief measures undertaken by South Central Railway to render succor to victims of floods in Kerala in 2018, intensively coordinating the entire operations from all over the zone.
Earlier, as Chief Electrical Engineer of South Central Railway, Mr. Thomas led the zone to achieve national-level recognition in energy conservation, enabling the zone to earn a record 09 National Energy Conservation Awards for 2016 from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, and Government of India. He has also been instrumental in initiating efforts towards better work efficiency and boosting workforce morale among the Loco running staff of the Zone.
Mr. Thomas has traveled widely for training and study programs abroad that include training in the design of power converters for three-phase ABB locos at Turgi & Zurich, Oerlikon, and Switzerland.
