ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand: Boosting the Thai Economy through Soft Power

From April 29th to June 15th, 2024, ASEAN and Indian tourists can participate in the ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ activity by voting for their favourite Thai soft power element and receiving a gift voucher for shopping for Thai products. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and its partners have launched this initiative, in line with the government’s objective of positioning Thailand as a tourism hub and promoting ASEAN as a unified tourism destination. This activity aims to support the government’s soft power promotion policy by increasing awareness and sales of Thai products.

Ms Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the TAT Governor, highlighted the project’s goal of enhancing Thailand’s appeal to short-haul travellers while showcasing the nation’s soft power through various products. Designed to be user-friendly and inclusive, the online quiz and gift voucher redemption process hopes to encourage ASEAN and Indian tourists to support Thai brands and products.

Passport holders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and India can vote for Thailand’s rich cultural resources, categorized into food, film, fashion, fight, and festivals, on the website aseanindiashoppers.com starting April 29th, 2024. Participants will receive gift vouchers valued between 500 Baht to 3,000 Baht each, which can be used to purchase Thai fashion, lifestyle brands, and authentic products at participating stores across various locations in Thailand.

These vouchers and privileges can be redeemed at stores in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chon Buri, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla, and Nakhon Ratchasima. It is expected that this project will attract 5,000 participants, generating approximately 131 million Baht in tourism revenue.

The primary objective of the ‘ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand’ activity is to promote short-haul tourism and encourage travel and spending by tourists from ASEAN and India, positioning Thailand as an ideal weekend destination and a popular shopping hotspot. With minimal travel time and favourable visa policies, Thailand anticipates surpassing 10 million visitor arrivals from ASEAN and reaching 1.7 million Indian tourists, constituting 35% of this year’s target of 35 million arrivals.
