Goa Unveils Landmark ₹120.97 Crore Town Square Project in Porvorim, Set to Transform Tourism Landscape

Goa’s Minister for Tourism, Mr. Rohan A. Khaunte, has announced a significant investment in the state’s tourism infrastructure following Cabinet approval of several key projects, most notably the ₹120.97 crore Town Square project in Porvorim. This development is poised to become a landmark attraction, redefining public spaces and promoting economic growth.

The press conference also revealed plans for the beautification of the Porvorim creek and the establishment of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum at Farmagudi, both initiatives aimed at enriching Goa’s cultural tourism experience. Dignitaries present included Mr. Kedar Naik, Director of Tourism; Mr. Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director, GTDC; and Mr. Gavin Dias, General Manager, GTDC.

Porvorim Town Square: A Vision for Integrated Public Space

The Town Square in Porvorim is envisioned as a pioneering development in India, a heritage-linked public space designed to simultaneously foster economic growth. Spanning 11,000 square meters, the project will serve as a dynamic, year-round platform for public programming and community engagement.

It will become a vibrant hub for local artisans, creating new opportunities for employment and cultural exchange. The square’s design incorporates various amenities, including a Market Court, Welcome Court, Fountain Court, Movie Court, Heritage Court, an Ashoka Stambh, and a Clock Tower, all designed to encourage social interaction and host diverse activities.

The estimated cost for the project is ₹120.97 crore, with ₹90.74 crore funded by the Central Government and ₹35.32 crore by the State Government. Completion is anticipated by March 2026.

Minister Khaunte extended his gratitude to  Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Union Minister for Tourism; Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant for their support. He emphasized that the Town Square will provide new avenues for artists and cultural entrepreneurs while offering a modern space deeply rooted in Goan heritage. He highlighted that this project will not only enhance the Porvorim area but also attract tourists and serve as a vital platform for creative expression.

Expanding Tourism Circuits and Promoting Monsoon Experiences

Mr. Khaunte further announced the sanctioning of a Rural Circuit project from Porvorim to Harvalem under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. This initiative will enhance the creek experience, encompassing Torda Creek, Malim Jetty, Virlosa, and Pomburpa spring, extending up to Harvalem. As part of the spiritual circuit, the Gomant Sarita Poojan will also be conducted in the Narve area, linking it to the Ekadasha Teertha initiative under Goa’s regenerative tourism model.

In line with the coastal component of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, Colva beach is also slated for redevelopment, with upgraded facilities and public spaces designed to enrich the visitor experience.

Addressing media inquiries, Mr. Khaunte clarified that there is no ban on visiting waterfalls or other monsoon-fed tourist spots. He reassured the public that visitor safety remains a top priority and that necessary measures are being taken in coordination with the Forest Department and the Goa Forest Development Corporation to ensure safe and enjoyable access to these attractions.

He also stressed the importance of responsible communication regarding Goa’s tourism sector, urging stakeholders to focus on the state’s positive momentum. Highlighting new efforts to promote “Monsoon Tourism, Mr. Khaunte stated that Goa is actively building a new narrative that encourages visitors to experience the state throughout the year.

Redefining Goa’s Tourism Narrative

Over the past three years, focused efforts have been made to broaden Goa’s tourism narrative beyond its renowned beaches. The aim has been to introduce new verticals that attract quality tourists and offer a more holistic experience of the state. From eco-tourism and adventure tourism to MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and wellness, Goa is actively developing unprecedented infrastructure. This expansion opens up opportunities for visitors to engage with Goa’s diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and emerging experiences beyond its coastline.

In total, nearly ₹400 crore worth of tourism projects have been sanctioned to Goa by the Central Ministry. Mr. Khaunte reiterated the importance of encouraging tourists to explore Goa beyond its sand and sea, fostering a deeper appreciation of the state’s culture, heritage, and hinterlands.

Addressing current industry challenges, he stated, “The world knows about Goa and Goans—‘amka bhivpachi garaj na’ (we don’t need to be afraid). But yes, we need to make some corrections.” He appealed to the media to actively partner in efforts to streamline taxi operations, tackle touting issues, and help maintain positive momentum in Goa’s tourism sector.
