IndiGo solidified its path to becoming a major global aviation player by significantly expanding its wide-body aircraft order with Airbus. The airline announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert 30 of its existing purchase rights for 70 aircraft into a firm order for Airbus A350-900s, effectively doubling its wide-body commitment from 30 to 60 firm aircraft. This strategic move marks another crucial step in IndiGo’s long-term international expansion plans.
Fueling International Growth and Connectivity
This latest order builds on a pivotal decision made in April 2024, when IndiGo initially placed a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70. Deliveries from that initial order are still expected to begin in 2027.
By expanding its wide-body fleet, IndiGo is poised to stretch its wings further, significantly growing its long-haul international network. This will enable the airline to connect major Indian cities with various parts of the world, offering customers a broader array of travel options to new international destinations. Crucially, this expansion will also facilitate more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines, enhancing global connectivity.
The IndiGo Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engine. The combination of the aircraft’s mission capability and the engine’s efficiency will provide IndiGo with unparalleled flexibility and reach as it enters the next phase of addressing the rapidly evolving needs of the Indian and global aviation markets.
In preparation for these long-haul operations, IndiGo already began introducing six temporarily leased wide-body aircraft in March 2025, with deliveries set to be completed by 2026.
Tapping into India’s Aviation Boom
This ambitious fleet expansion comes at a time when India stands as the world’s third-largest aviation market. With the government’s strong commitment to developing cutting-edge infrastructure and transforming the country into a global aviation hub, the opportunities for growth are immense. IndiGo’s strategic investments in its wide-body fleet align perfectly with this national vision, positioning the airline to lead India’s ascent on the global aviation stage.
