Tourism India’s editorial team had a detailed interaction with Mrs. Jyoti Mayal, in connection with International Women’s Day 2025. Here are excerpts from the responses by Mrs. Jyoti Mayal,

As one of the most respected women leaders in the Indian travel and tourism industry, what inspired you to take on leadership roles within the sector?

I never initially planned to join the travel industry—it was a path that found me when I met my husband, who had already built one of India’s leading travel companies. Stepping into an established business made my transition smooth, but what truly drew me in was the people. Engaging with clients, corporate leaders, airline partners, and tourism stakeholders provided me with invaluable insights into human behavior and the power of relationships in both business and personal spaces.

As I progressed in my career, I realized that leadership is about more than just professional success—it’s about making an impact. My involvement with the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), the Tourism & Hospitality Skill Council (THSC), and various women’s initiatives has allowed me to support entrepreneurship, advocate for girls’ education, and contribute to skill development alongside corporate and government bodies. I firmly believe that the industry requires several reforms, and I am deeply satisfied that I have been able to support the sector selflessly and with full commitment.

Tourism is more than just travel; it is a force for cultural exchange, economic growth, and global harmony. It brings people together, fostering connections that transcend borders and transforming conversations into opportunities for shared progress. I am passionate about driving these changes and making a positive impact in the lives of those I encounter.

To me, leadership is about empowerment—helping others realize their potential and make a difference in the world. It’s about creating a legacy of positive change and inspiring others to follow their dreams, just as I have followed mine.

Can you share some of the key challenges you faced while leading the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), and how you navigated them?

Leading the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) came with its own set of challenges, particularly during turbulent times. Navigating industry uncertainties required fostering innovation, strengthening alliances, and promoting upskilling to ensure that TAAI remained a strong voice for the travel fraternity. Constantly upgrading everyone’s knowledge about products and destinations while preparing for the future was my mantra. Embracing digital transformation was essential, and we invested in training programs and workshops to help travel agents adapt to new technologies and digital tools, ensuring they remained competitive and relevant.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, especially concerning airline refunds, GST, and TCS policies. We worked tirelessly to secure 100% refunds from airlines, ensuring that travel agents and their clients were not left at a financial loss. Collaborating with government bodies, we advocated for favorable GST and TCS policies to alleviate financial burdens on travel businesses. Motivating the industry was a herculean task as the future was uncertain. Establishing correct policies and protocols was crucial for reopening borders safely and reviving the industry.

Advocating for policy reforms to support travel agents required persistence and collaboration with government bodies. We lobbied for policies that would benefit the travel industry, such as tax incentives, simplified regulations, and improved infrastructure. Building strong relationships with policymakers was key to achieving these reforms, and under my leadership, several first-time achievements were realized.

Encouraging entrepreneurship and skill development was essential for the industry’s growth. Through initiatives with TAAI, THSC, and various women’s programs, we provided resources and support to budding entrepreneurs and professionals. This not only enhanced their capabilities but also contributed to the overall development of the industry.

Ensuring the health and safety of travelers was a top priority. We collaborated with health authorities and industry stakeholders to develop and promote health and safety protocols. This helped rebuild trust in travel, encouraging people to explore the world once again.

Despite these challenges, my commitment to the industry and the collaborative efforts of our members and partners helped us navigate these obstacles successfully. By turning challenges into opportunities, we ensured that TAAI remained a resilient and influential organization in the travel industry.

You have traveled extensively and interacted with global tourism leaders and administrators of various ministries in India and Indian states. How have these experiences shaped your vision for India’s travel and tourism industry?

Traveling extensively and engaging with global tourism leaders and Indian policymakers has significantly broadened my perspective on the potential of India’s travel industry. Each interaction reinforced the need for strong policies, digital transformation, and skill development. These experiences have shown me how tourism drives economies, builds cultural bridges, and fosters peace.

As someone who works closely with the Ministry of Tourism, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), various state tourism boards, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and the Ministry of Finance, I have gained invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of the industry. My vision has always been to position India as a global tourism leader by enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable travel, and empowering women and entrepreneurs to make the industry more inclusive and dynamic.

Collaboration between government bodies and the private sector is essential for creating policies that benefit the entire travel ecosystem. By leveraging digital transformation, we can streamline processes, improve customer experiences, and drive innovation. Additionally, focusing on skill development ensures that our workforce is equipped to meet the evolving demands of the industry.

Promoting sustainable travel is crucial for preserving our cultural heritage and natural resources. By adopting eco-friendly practices and encouraging responsible tourism, we can ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the beauty and diversity of our country.

Empowering women and entrepreneurs is a key aspect of my vision. By providing resources, support, and opportunities, we can create a more inclusive and vibrant industry that benefits all stakeholders. The combined efforts of the tourism ministry, IATA, state tourism boards, and other ministries play a crucial role in achieving this vision.

Through these collaborative efforts, we can position India as a global tourism leader, driving economic growth, cultural exchange, and global harmony.

Women leaders are playing an increasingly vital role in shaping the Indian travel industry. How do you see their impact evolving in the coming years?

Women leaders are making a profound impact on the Indian travel industry with their vision, resilience, and exceptional multitasking abilities. Their influence is fostering greater innovation, inclusivity, and safety within tourism. As more women step into leadership roles, their impact will continue to grow, driving forward policies that support sustainability, skill development, and entrepreneurship.

In the coming years, we can expect women leaders to play an increasingly pivotal role in shaping a more diverse, dynamic, and globally competitive travel industry. With their increasing representation in both corporate and government bodies, women will be at the forefront of implementing changes that promote sustainable travel practices, enhance infrastructure, and ensure the industry’s growth.

Their leadership will also be instrumental in promoting skill development and empowering more women and entrepreneurs within the sector. By advocating for policies that support inclusivity and innovation, women leaders will help create a travel industry that reflects the richness and diversity of India itself.

The continued rise of women leaders in the travel industry is not just about breaking barriers; it’s about leveraging their unique perspectives and strengths to drive meaningful and lasting change. Their contributions will ensure that the Indian travel industry remains resilient, forward-thinking, and ready to meet the demands of a global market.

What changes in policies or workplace culture can help create a more inclusive environment for women in the travel and hospitality industry?

Creating a truly inclusive environment for women in travel and hospitality starts with policies that support work-life balance, such as flexible schedules and maternity benefits. Companies must implement mentorship programs that guide women toward leadership roles while ensuring equal pay and growth opportunities. Safety is another key aspect—strong workplace policies and a supportive culture are essential in fostering a professional environment where women can thrive.
