Lufthansa Group Secures Additional 40 Airbus A220s

The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Group has approved the firm order for an additional 40 A220-300s to bolster its short and medium-haul fleet. Since 2016 SWISS introduced the first A220 into scheduled service, this aircraft model has been an integral part of the Lufthansa Group’s operations.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG expressed the airline’s commitment to its enduring partnership with Airbus, stating, “With today’s order for 40 additional Airbus A220s, we are continuing our unique partnership with Airbus.” He highlighted the recent milestone of receiving the 600th aircraft from Airbus and anticipates taking delivery of the 700th aircraft soon. Spohr emphasized that customers eagerly await these modern, economical, and fuel-efficient additions to the fleet.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International acknowledged Lufthansa Group’s early adoption of the A220 and its successful integration into the SWISS route network. He expressed delight at the continued confidence shown by Lufthansa Group, emphasizing the A220’s efficiency in supporting the airline’s development and sustainability goals.

Lufthansa’s latest order underscores its enduring relationship with Airbus, spanning several decades and encompassing various Airbus aircraft, from the A300 in the 1970s to the present A220, A320-Family, A330/A340, A350, and A380.

The A220-300, the newest addition to the A220 Family, accommodates 120 to 150 passengers on flights covering up to 3,400 nautical miles (6,300 km). With a 25% lower fuel burn and reduced CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft, the A220-300 prioritizes fuel efficiency. Its spacious cabin, seats, and windows and superior comfort set it apart in its class.

Noteworthy is the A220’s capability to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aligning with Airbus’s commitment to sustainability. Airbus aims for all its commercial and military aircraft and helicopters to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

As of November, Airbus has secured 849 orders from 31 customers for the A220, with 303 already delivered. The A220 is in successful service with 18 airlines worldwide, covering over 1,350 routes.
