Maldivian Makes History with First-Ever Direct Flight to Australia

Maldivian, the national carrier of the Republic of Maldives, has achieved a landmark moment in its history – and in Maldivian aviation – by launching the first-ever non-stop flight between the Maldives and Australia. The airline’s Airbus A330 departed Velana International Airport in Malé on Sunday May 17, 2026 night and touched down in Melbourne, completing a journey that no direct flight had made before.

“A proud moment for the Maldives,” the airline declared, as crew, dignitaries, and passengers came together for a commemorative group photo marking the historic arrival.

Cutting the Journey in Half

For Australian travellers, reaching the Maldives has long meant navigating a web of connections through Asian hub airports – Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, or Dubai – with total travel times regularly stretching to 15, 18, or even 20 hours. The new Maldivian service changes that calculus entirely. The direct flight covers the distance in approximately 11 hours outbound and 10.5 hours on the return, effectively cutting journey time in half and removing the fatigue and complexity of transit stops.

The weekly service operates every Sunday, deployed on Maldivian’s wide-body Airbus A330-200, configured with 18 fully lie-flat business class seats and 246 economy seats – a product well suited to the long-haul leisure traveller.

An Exclusive Partnership with Luxury Escapes

The route has been launched in partnership with Luxury Escapes, one of Australia’s leading travel platforms, and is currently available exclusively through that channel. Marketed as the Maldivian Luxury Escapes Express, the service is bookable as part of bundled resort packages requiring a minimum five-night stay. Adding a thoughtful touch, the package includes complimentary early check-in timed to the direct flight’s arrival – giving guests extra hours to settle into their island resort well before standard check-in times.

The timing of the launch is deliberate, arriving ahead of the Australian summer holiday season when outbound leisure travel demand traditionally peaks.

A New Chapter in Maldivian’s Expansion

The Melbourne route marks a significant step in Maldivian’s evolution from a regional carrier into a long-haul operator, leveraging its A330-200 wide-body capability to connect the Maldives to markets that were previously out of comfortable reach. For the Maldives tourism industry, Australia has long been a high-value but difficult-to-reach source market – one where journey time and transit complexity have historically dampened travel frequency. A direct connection removes that barrier.

At Melbourne Airport, passengers on the inaugural arrival were welcomed with a characteristically warm Maldivian greeting – complete with a surprise appearance by Wingy, the airline’s beloved mascot, spreading smiles at the baggage belt and offering arriving travellers their first taste of the island hospitality that awaits them.

For Maldivian, the successful landing in Melbourne is more than a new route. It is a signal of ambition — and, as the airline itself put it, the best part is that it is only the beginning.
