Abu Dhabi International Airport was renamed Zayed International Airport in honour of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Mr. Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Advisor of Special Affairs at the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Airports’ Board of Directors, graced the renaming ceremony of Abu Dhabi International Airport to Zayed International Airport. This significant event, held to honour the UAE’s revered Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s aviation history. With a vision to cater to Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning tourism demand and solidify its stature as a pivotal hub for trade and commerce, Zayed International Airport promises a reimagined airport experience for passengers and partners alike.
In its first 60 days of full operational capacity since November 15, 2023, Zayed International Airport welcomed an impressive 4.48 million passengers, reflecting the airport’s swift integration into the global aviation landscape. The surge in passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi Airports, registering a remarkable 44.5% increase in 2023 compared to the previous year, underscores the region’s growing prominence in the aviation sector.
At the heart of Zayed International Airport lies Terminal A, one of the world’s largest terminals, boasting the capacity to accommodate up to 45 million passengers annually. This monumental infrastructure milestone signals a new era for transport and aviation infrastructure not only in Abu Dhabi but also across the UAE. With an array of world-class facilities, including cutting-edge biometric technology, extensive retail and dining options sprawled over 35,000 square meters, and a network of 163 outlets, Terminal A places passenger experience at the forefront of its operations.
Ms. Elena Sorlini, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports said: “Zayed International Airport is a gateway through which we share Abu Dhabi and its heritage with the world, welcoming travellers by articulating the values of connectivity, innovation and sustainability. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our employees, partners and everyone else involved, 2023 has been an overwhelmingly positive year for Abu Dhabi Airports. I am particularly proud that since its opening, Terminal A‘s operations have been very successful. Passengers are given an authentic, inclusive, and seamless traveller experience rooted in the Emirati heritage of hospitality and powered by state-of-the-art technology. We are excited for what lies ahead for Zayed International Airport as it embarks on the next chapter of its journey under the cherished name of the Founding Father of the nation.”
The unveiling of Zayed International Airport’s new brand identity celebrates the rich heritage and identity of Abu Dhabi, drawing inspiration from its landscape, history, and iconic landmarks. Symbolized by a traditional dhow boat, a date palm tree, the desert sun, the Qasr Al Hosn Fort, and the iconic Terminal A building, the new logo encapsulates the essence of Abu Dhabi while inviting travellers to embark on their unique journeys.
Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi Airports anticipates sustained growth in passenger and cargo traffic, with Zayed International Airport poised to play a central role in this trajectory. As the airport continues to elevate the aviation experience and bolster connectivity on a global scale, it remains a beacon of Sheikh Zayed’s enduring legacy, embodying his vision of progress, unity, and prosperity for generations to come.
