Sri Lankan Airlines has augmented its fleet by introducing a newly leased Airbus A320 aircraft with the serial number 4R – ABS, thereby increasing its total aircraft count to 22.
Leased for a six-year term, the aircraft arrived from Malaysia to Colombo last night (21 December 2023) and will be put into service promptly after customization and branding. Its inaugural scheduled flight is anticipated to take place on 29 December ’23 in the Maldives.
The aircraft is notably equipped with Sharklet wingtips, designed to reduce drag and enhance fuel efficiency. It is set to be primarily deployed on the airline’s short and medium-haul routes, covering the Indian subcontinent, the Far East, and the Middle East. Featuring a configuration of 12 Business Class seats and 138 Economy Class seats, 4R – ABS will enable Sri Lankan to augment its seat capacity on these routes.
Sri Lankan Airlines currently boasts 12 narrow-bodied aircraft and 10 wide-bodied aircraft in its fleet. Despite the challenges faced by the airline and the industry at large throughout the year, characterized by shortages of available aircraft and engines, as well as supply chain issues leading to extended maintenance times and reduced flights, this new addition marks the beginning of a series of enhancements. By the start of January 2024, SriLankan anticipates three more aircraft to join its fleet, including a wet-leased A330 and the arrival of two additional engines. Furthermore, the airline is set to receive another sister aircraft to 4R – ABS in March 2024.
Maintaining direct operations between Colombo and 36 cities in 21 countries, Sri Lankan Airlines is also a proud member of the Oneworld Alliance.
