Women in Travel & Tourism: A Journey of Passion, Perseverance & Power

Mrs. Devaki Thiyagarajan, Chair Person, TAAI- Southern Region &  Founder, Avocet Tours & Travel Pvt. Ltd. Chennai

As the travel and tourism industry continues to evolve, women entrepreneurs are breaking barriers, taking charge, and redefining leadership in this dynamic sector. One such inspiring figure is Mrs. Devaki Thiyagarajan, the founder and Managing Director of Chennai based Avocet Tours & Travel Pvt. Ltd., who has navigated challenges, embraced innovation, and championed the role of women in travel.

Finding Her Calling in Travel

For Devaki, the tourism journey wasn’t just a business decision—it was a calling. “My passion for travel and ticketing was the driving force,” she recalls. “I started as a freelancer under the guidance of Mr. Saravanan of Viking Tours and Travel. Those early years were all about learning the ropes, understanding the nuances of the industry, and building a network.”

In 2004, she co-founded Avocet Tours and Travel Pvt. Ltd., stepping into an industry where women entrepreneurs were few and far between. “There were challenges—organizing tours, handling visas, and proving myself in a male-dominated space. But perseverance, dedication, and a keen understanding of travelers’ needs helped me establish a strong foundation.”

Women in Leadership: Breaking Barriers

The role of women in leadership within the travel industry is evolving, but it hasn’t been an easy road. “Being in a male-dominated industry pushes you to be stronger,” says Devaki. “You have to take bold decisions, trust your instincts, and make your mark. Women entrepreneurs bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and a strong sense of responsibility to the business.”

Devaki has been actively involved with the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), which has played a significant role in empowering women in the industry. “TAAI @75 is launching the TAAI WOW Awards 2025 (Women of Wonder) to celebrate the most accomplished women in travel. Recognizing women’s contributions is crucial—it inspires the next generation to dream big.”

Gender Equality & Industry Challenges

Has she faced gender biases in her career? “Of course! Women often have to work twice as hard to prove their credibility.

But my advice? Don’t stay behind the scenes. Step up, take charge, and balance your work and personal life with confidence.”

She firmly believes that the industry needs equal opportunities, decision-making power for women, and greater recognition for female entrepreneurs. “Women are already running successful travel businesses. The industry must acknowledge and support them better.”

Adapting to Change: Post-Pandemic Travel & Emerging Trends

The travel industry has seen massive shifts post-pandemic, and Devaki’s company has embraced these changes with technology and flexibility. “Avocet Travels has adapted by leveraging digital tools, offering seamless travel experiences, and focusing on responsible tourism. The key is to evolve with the times.”

When asked about trends that women entrepreneurs should tap into, she emphasizes experiential travel and sustainable tourism. “Today’s travelers seek meaningful experiences. Women entrepreneurs should focus on curating unique, responsible, and immersive travel experiences.”

Safety is also a key concern, especially for female travelers. “We actively encourage women-only travel groups, ensuring safety measures and personalized services for a comfortable experience.”

Work-Life Balance & The Power of Mentorship

Managing a business while balancing personal responsibilities is no easy feat. “I believe in flexible working. Many of our team members work remotely, and even I work from home when needed. Technology has made it possible to stay connected and ensure smooth operations.”

Mentorship has played a significant role in her journey. “Even though I come from a business background, there were moments when I needed guidance. Having a mentor, or even just a support system, makes a world of difference.”

Her advice to young women looking to start their own travel business? “Be bold, be creative, and leap. The opportunities in this industry are limitless.”

The Future of Women in Travel & Tourism

As the travel industry grows, so do opportunities for women entrepreneurs. “Tourism has the power to uplift women globally. More women stepping into leadership roles means a more inclusive and diverse industry.”

She also believes that men in leadership positions have an important role to play in fostering gender equality. “We, as women, are already creating new avenues. But male policymakers and industry leaders must support us by ensuring equal opportunities and an inclusive work environment.”

Her final message to aspiring women entrepreneurs? “The future of tourism belongs to those who dare to dream big. Be fearless, think outside the box, and most importantly—be responsible tourism professionals.”
